After several months of working together virtually, it was great to finally get together for an offsite Product meeting at the stunning Villa Wilhelma.
We discussed Fiverr’s future, measuring progress, and shared some great ideas for branding the product group.

I’m blown away by the way that George Eliot was able to bring an entire town to life and recreate the mental life of so many different characters. It’s a huge, ambitious and addictive book, and it’s a great read over a long(ish) vacation.

It tells the story of a young boy in Normandy during WW2. It is a love story in the midst of historical events and I’ve read it more than once. What I find intriguing about it is how the characters are considered brave and perhaps even mad according to their environment. In a time when right and wrong kept changing, love, hope and freedom prevailed.

Two years ago, Ophira Sternberg-Levin joined Fiverr as a expert.

What attracted you to working at Fiverr?
“Few companies have an impact on people’s lives like Fiverr, and I really wanted to be part of Fiverr’s mission. Also, you get the chance to work on so many different aspects of the product, which is incredibly enriching.”

How do you stay on top of your role or keep developing in your field?
“I try to listen to people. Taking the time to listen builds empathy, which is the cornerstone of UX writing. In addition, I never stop learning about UX: I read a lot, listen to podcasts, and try to attend (online) meetups and conferences as much as I can—it’s a great way to get inspired, and learn how fellow UX writers solve similar challenges.“

What’s a rewarding project that you’ve worked on at Fiverr?
“I really enjoyed working on the Logo Maker! It was exciting to build the product from scratch, together with a great team of talented and professional people, and I absolutely love the result.”

What’s the best thing about your role at Fiverr?
“Versatility. You get to work on all aspects of the product, collaborate with different teams and people, and learn new things every day. In fact, no day is the same and I just love that :-)”

“Nickharris01 has helped me out with small UX writing tasks and has always been great to work with!”

Sivan Yaron-Enden is the product manager responsible for Fiverr’s mobile app. We caught up with her to hear more.

What attracted you to working at Fiverr?
“Fiverr is creating a new way for people to work together which can change the world. The work we do creates sources of income, makes projects come to life, and makes people’s dreams come true. I wanted to become a part of that mission and to make a real impact on the product, our customers, and on Fiverr.”

What’s the best thing about your role?
“The freedom to innovate and fail. We A/B test almost every feature we release, and most things fail at first. There is a general understanding that those who don't do, don't fail and that if we want to innovate and improve we should test, and that failure is part of that process, as well as learning from it. The freedom to fail is what gives me the freedom to innovate and experiment.”

What’s a great piece of advice you got that helped with your career?
“Remember that you spend most of your waking hours at work (most days at least). It should be doing something you enjoy, with people you enjoy doing it with.”

What advice would you give someone applying to a role like yours at Fiverr?
“Don't jump to the answers before you thoroughly understand if there really is a problem, and what it entails. Being a "problem solver" myself means that I tend to try and solve the issues and challenges my users are facing. I find that many times, before posing the solutions it is better to define the scope of the problem we are trying to solve or the experience we are trying to improve, before coming up with potential solutions.”

Is there a Fiverr Seller you’ve worked with that you’d like to recommend?
“https://www.fiverr.com/javanart created a beautiful line family portrait for my mom's 60th birthday. It was a unique and thoughtful picture capturing the whole family.”

Spring cleaning over the holidays? Fiverr’s product design team is way ahead of you. Dor Ben Shimon has the details.

What’s your role?

“I’m the Product Designer responsible for Fiverr’s design system.”

What's that?

“It’s a collection of methodologies, UI libraries and documentation that help us build products and features faster and more efficiently.”

So why did Fiverr create a design system?

“It all started 2 ½ years ago, when we needed a design library to store components like, say, buttons, that we didn’t want to keep recreating each time we needed them. We started out with just a simple file in Sketch but we’ve now progressed to a much more organized and extensive library sitting in Figma, plus a Storybook and documentation in Notion. We’ve even started to onboard new front end developers by teaching them all about Figma and our design system.”

How does it help keep the design process organized?

“Now we have a design system we’re able to have much more organized processes—so if someone needs to upload an icon, they’ll need to go through a specific process. This is important because our team is growing, in fact the number of designers has doubled in a year and we’re still hiring! Having this system makes it possible for our growing team to collaborate together without creating chaos. Nowadays almost every component goes through the design system and we brainstorm about which components we need and work out why we need them and make sure that we deliver them in the right way; so they are reusable for every team at Fiverr. We also have a developer working exclusively on the design system, which lets us have ownership on the development side as well as the design side, and to move faster in rolling out our design system across the company.”

How does it make design and product simpler?

“It makes it simpler because now that we have lots of components sitting in our design library it’s much easier for anyone to create variants from specific components. Everything is in Figma, so any designer can easily pick a component and start working with it.”

What’s been the best part of working on the design system?

“It’s really impactful. It’s a challenge by itself but it’s also very exciting to see how everyone can work more quickly and that we can progress faster as a team. Ultimately it makes me really excited to be a part of this amazing ecosystem.”

Where do you want to go next?

“Right now we’re focusing on creating all the basic functionality. Beyond that we want to make it more accessible to everyone in the company, to improve our documentation and to keep on creating more components and expanding our guidelines.”
