5 Simple Steps to Protect Your PC from Hackers

In this world of ubiquitous computers and persistent threats from hackers, protecting your computer is a must. The key pathway through which malware attacks the system is the Internet and its popular service, the Web.

There are numerous ways to protect and remove malware from our computers. No one method is enough to ensure your computer is secure. The more layers of defense, the harder for hackers to use your computer. Here are five simple, but critical steps to protect your computer,

Install Firewall
Install Antivirus Software
Install Anti-Spyware Software
Use Complex and Secure Passwords
Check on the Security Settings of the Browser

Install Firewall

A firewall enacts the role of a security guard. There are of two types of firewalls: a software firewall and hardware firewall. Each serves similar, but different purposes. A firewall is the first step to provide security to the computer. It creates a barrier between the computer and any unauthorized program trying to come in through the Internet. If you are using a system at home, turn on the firewall permanently. It makes you aware if there are any unauthorized efforts to use your system.

Install Antivirus Software:

Antivirus is one other means to protect the computer. It is software that helps to protect the computer from any unauthorized code or software that creates a threat to the system. Unauthorized software includes viruses, keyloggers, trojans etc. This might slow down the processing speed of your computer, delete important files and access personal information. Even if your system is virus free, you must install an antivirus software to prevent the system from further attack of virus.

Antivirus software plays a major role in real time protection, its added advantage of detecting threats helps computer and the information in it to be safe. Some advanced antivirus programs provide automatic updates, this further helps to protect the PC from newly created viruses.

Antivirus for Windows 8 software may include advanced features such as email protection, blocking of pop-ups and identity theft.
Install Anti-Spyware Software:

spy Spyware is a software program that collects personal information or information about an organization without their approval. This information is redirected to a third party website. Spyware are designed in such a way that they are not easy to be removed. Anti-Spyware software is solely dedicated to combat spyware. Similar to antivirus software, anti-spyware software offers real time protection. It scans all the incoming information and helps in blocking the threat once detected. Comodo Free Antivirus comes with spyware protection built in.
Use Complex and Secure Passwords:

password The first line of defence in maintaining system security is to have strong and complex passwords. Complex passwords are difficult for the hackers to find. Use a password that is at least 8 characters in length and include a combination of numbers, letters that are both upper and lower case and a special character. Hackers use certain tools to break easy passwords in few minutes. One recent study showed that a 6 character password with all lower case letters can be broken in under 6 minutes!
Check on the Security Settings of the Browser:

Browsers have various security and privacy settings that you should review and set to the level you desire. Recent browsers give you ability to tell web sites to not track your movements, increasing your privacy and security.

Seven tips for safe internet banking
Whether it is bill payments, funds transfer or creation of a fixed deposit, internet banking allows you to do it in a fast and convenient way. Instead of going to the bank and waiting in an unending queue, internet banking has made all banking functions accessible through a few clicks. However, this facility needs to be used very carefully due to the risk of phishing – fraudulent means of attaining your confidential banking information.

Listed below are seven smart tips for internet banking.

Change your password regularly
For the first time you login to your internet banking account, you will need to use the password provided by the bank. However, you need to change this password in order to keep your account safe. In addition, keep changing your password at regular intervals. More importantly, keep the password confidential at all times.

Do not use public computers to login
Avoid logging in to your bank account at common computers in cyber cafes or libraries. These are crowded places, and there are more chances of your password being traced or seen by others. If you have to login from such places, make sure you clear the cache and browsing history, and delete all the temporary files from the computer. Also, never allow the browser to remember your ID and password.

Do not share your details with anyone
Your bank will never ask for your confidential information via phone or email. So whether you get an apparent phone call from the bank or an email requesting your details, do not give out your login information. Use your login ID and password only on the official login page of the bank, which should be a secure website. Look for 'https://' in the URL when logging in; it means that the website is secure.

Keep checking your savings account regularly
Check your account after making any transaction online. Verify whether the right amount has been deducted from your account. If you see any discrepancies in the amount, inform the bank immediately.

Always use licenced anti-virus software
To protect your computer from new viruses, ensure that you always use licenced anti-virus software. Pirated versions of anti-virus softwares may be available for free, but they may fail to protect your computer from new viruses prevalent in the online world. In addition, you will get notifications for updates in the software periodically. Make sure that you keep your anti-virus updated, so that your confidential information is always protected.

Disconnect the internet connection when not in use
Most broadband users do not disconnect the internet connection on their computer when they are not using it. Malicious hackers can access your computer via an internet connection and steal your confidential banking information. To keep your data protected, ensure that you disconnect from the internet when you do not require it.

Type your internet banking URL
It is a safer to type your bank URL in the address bar of the browser than clicking on links given in an email. There are instances of fraudsters sending emails with fraudulent websites links that are designed exactly like the bank’s original website. Once you enter your login details on such a website, they may be used to access your account and steal your money. While logging on, check for 'https://' in the URL and ensure that it is your bank’s authentic website.

Are you a criminal now? Users may get 3 years in jail for viewing torrent site, blocked URL
in IndiaCurrently, the scary message on blocked torrent sites read: “This URL has been blocked under the instructions of the Competent Government Authority or in compliance with the orders of a Court of competent jurisdiction. Viewing, downloading, exhibiting or duplicating an illicit copy of the contents under this URL is punishable as an offence under the laws of India, including but not limited to under Sections 63, 63-A, 65 and 65-A of the Copyright Act, 1957 which prescribe imprisonment for 3 years and also fine of upto Rs. 3,00,000/-. Any person aggrieved by any such blocking of this URL may contact the nodal officer at [email protected] who will, within 48 hours, provide you the details of relevant proceedings under which you can approach the relevant High Court or Authority for redressal of your
grievance.”However, it should be noted that the notice does not give clarity on any particular law and seems like a petty warning to scare off potential visitors. In a layman’s term, it is an amalgamation of various inapplicable laws have been merged together. But the message, due to its ambiguity, looks threatening rather than being informative.

The notice said that merely viewing a blocked torrent website or URL could land users in trouble. Though the warning message aims to curb piracy-mongers, cracking down on users for just viewing a torrent site does not make any sense. It’s impossible to prosecute users who mistakenly land up on a blocked website. Most importantly, this part of the notice does not even violate the Indian Copyright Act

Some of the other points that are mentioned in the notice zealously stated
that viewing, downloading, exhibiting or duplicating an illicit copy of the contents under this URL is punishable as an offence under the laws of India. However, the sections under which a user would be panelised including section 63, 63-A, 65 and 65-A of the Copyright Act, 1957 have little nexus with how torrent websites work. The notice also fails to give any clear reason to how these sections might apply.

This notice looks more like an attempt to stop users from opening these blocked sites but fails to explain the root cause properly. If the government is looking to curb piracy, it should start more awareness programmes and educate online users rather than sending out spurious notice
