In the Summer 2026 edition of IDRA Global Connections, the quarterly publication of the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA), Mr. Rajiv Mittal, Chairman & Managing Director, VA TECH WABAG LTD., shares his Executive Viewpoint on the transformation shaping the future of the global water sector.
Mr. Mittal highlights the transition from conventional freshwater sources towards “Manufactured Water”, with water reuse and desalination creating reliable and climate-resilient alternative water sources while helping preserve precious freshwater for drinking and domestic needs.
He also explores the shift from building plants to delivering performance, where lifecycle efficiency, reliability and long-term value are becoming increasingly important, and how AI, Digital Twins, predictive analytics and IoT are taking the sector from automation towards operational intelligence. The viewpoint further examines the evolution from wastewater treatment to resource recovery, with future-ready plants recovering clean water, renewable energy, Bio-CNG and valuable nutrients, advancing the transition towards a Circular Water Economy.
Ultimately, success must be measured not merely by the infrastructure we build, but by the freshwater we conserve, resources we recover, communities we strengthen and water security we create for generations to come.
