CloudFlare: Hong Kong democracy movement hit by ‘one of largest DDoS attacks in internet history’:

Occupy Central, a grassroots movement that aims to bring universal suffrage to Hong Kong, has been subject to “one of the largest and most persistent DDoS attacks in the history of the Internet,” according to CloudFlare, the web performance company maintaining its website.

Under the current political system, the Chinese government proposes a number of candidates to lead Hong Kong, with the winner voted by the city-state’s 1,200-member Election Committee. China previously pledged to introduce direct-voting for the candidates by 2017, but Occupy Central is campaigning for a one-man one-vote system for electing the shortlist of candidates too, and it is running an unofficial referendum of Hong Kong citizens.

Its Popvote.hk website suffered stability issues this week following a strong DDoS attack. CloudFlare CEO Matthew Prince claims that even more sophisticated attacks are battering it today — although the site has reportedly managed to log over 90,000 votes within its first two hours.

While such an overtly public campaign to bring democracy leads to assumptions that the cyberattacks on Occupy Central are being organized by the Chinese government, the source of the attacks has not been identified yet.

On a related topic, China’s internet censorship system has been in override of late. Dropbox was found to be blocked yesterday, while the government clamped down on Google services ahead of the Tiananmen Square protests in early June. That’s not unusual, but the fact that the Google blockages remain in place today is unprecedented.

Interestingly, Prince suggests that these recent incidents are tempting him to reverse a decision to locate CloudFlare’s first Asia-based server in Singapore.

Thalmic Labs unveils the final design for MYO, its armband for Minority Report-style motion control:

Thalmic Labs is one step closer to unleashing its MYO gesture control armband on the world. The company today revealed the final design for the device, which lets you control and interact with technology using only your fingers and hands.

The prior design looked quite bulky, with a solid strap that covered the entire circumference of your arm. In the new version, Thalmic Labs has cut the armband down to “nearly half the thickness” and used a new design that reveals more of your skin. A zigzagging line connects each block in the MYO armband, giving it a futuristic and stylish aesthetic.

The MYO can be worn just below the elbow on either arm, and detects the electrical activity produced by your muscles. It connects to other devices using Bluetooth Low Energy and can be used for a wide range of functions; in a promotional video, the user can seen stopping a track in iTunes by clenching his fist, as well as swiping through webpages by waving his hand up and down.

Thalmic Labs will be hoping that third-party developers embrace the device though – it launched a developer program last July, giving curious minds access to various documentation and APIs related to the hardware. Without widespread software support, it’ll be little more than a trinket on your desk.

The MYO armband is available to pre-order for $149. Thalamic Labs will start shipping developer kit pre-orders next month, before sending out non-developer orders in September. All customers will receive the final hardware though – and the armband will be available for general purchase this fall.
