Exciting news! We've made significant strides in speech recognition, particularly in recognizing speech from vulnerable individuals in low-resource languages like Tamil. Our work addresses the challenges faced by automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems when dealing with speech variations, such as those influenced by the speaker's age, gender, and vulnerability.
Utilizing a dataset from the LT-EDI@EACL2024 shared task, we propose a fine-tuned ASR model tailored for vulnerable individuals. Our approach involved training and testing pre-trained ASR models, including XLS-R and Whisper. The results are remarkable, with the fine-tuned Whisper ASR model outperforming XLSR and securing first place in the shared task by achieving a WER of 24.452. This signifies the model's superior performance in recognizing speech from diverse individuals.
This research not only enhances our understanding of speech recognition but also paves the way for more inclusive and accurate ASR systems. Our recent research in accented speech classification, which is pivotal for advancing automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology is now indexed. Our study focuses on addressing the challenges posed by limited data availability for accent variation, particularly in resource-poor languages.
We would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our collaborators (Dr.Jyothish Lal G and Dr Premjith B from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore) for their invaluable contributions to this project. Together, we proposed a few-shot learning paradigm specifically tailored for Indian language speaker accents. By leveraging a pre-trained whisper model and fine-tuning techniques from the LLM framework, we achieved remarkable results.
Our experimental findings on the Indic Accent Dataset, encompassing six Indian English accents, demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. With just 5% of the model's parameters being trainable, we achieved up to 94% accuracy.
This research not only enhances ASR technology but also opens up new possibilities for improving speech recognition in diverse linguistic contexts. Thank you to everyone involved for making this achievement possible.
