The Ban That Changed Everything
Starting April 1, 2026, the Indian government is enforcing a nationwide ban on the sale of internet-connected CCTV cameras from major Chinese manufacturers, including Hikvision, Dahua, and TP-Link. This isn’t a sudden decision. It’s the result of strict new certification requirements under the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) framework, driven by national security concerns.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has drawn a clear line in the sand. All surveillance equipment must now comply with the IS 13252-1 cybersecurity standard, and manufacturers must disclose the country of origin for their critical System-on-Chip (SoC) components. Here’s the catch: the government is denying certification to products using Chinese-origin chipsets.

Why the Ban?
National security isn’t negotiable. Surveillance systems monitor homes, offices, factories, public spaces, and critical infrastructure. The risk of unauthorized remote access, data breaches, or foreign espionage through compromised hardware is too high to ignore. This ban is about protecting India’s data sovereignty and physical infrastructure.
