It is deeply saddening to learn about the untimely demise of Late Shri Balwan Singh ji, a grassroots innovator who earned recognition in agriculture through his outstanding innovation, ‘Santra 500’ (Balwan Pyaz)-onion variety. His decades-long inspiring association with the NIF family and his simplicity, dedication, and spirit of innovation will always be remembered and continue to inspire young minds and innovators across the nation.

The National Innovation Foundation–India (NIF) conducted a two-day hands-on training programme at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Barnala, following the installation of a Multipurpose Food Processing Machine and a Corn Shelling Machine. The programme aimed to equip Self-Help Group (SHG) members with practical skills in food processing and value addition to enhance their livelihood opportunities.

Participants received hands-on training in preparing a variety of value-added products, including mango juice and khoya (mawa), and were introduced to efficient processing techniques such as mechanized potato peeling using the multipurpose unit. The training underscored the potential of value addition in enabling SHG members to establish small-scale enterprises, augment incomes, and build sustainable livelihood models.

In addition, demonstrations of the Corn Shelling Machine provided farmers with practical exposure to efficient maize shelling techniques. The machine enables rapid separation of kernels from cobs with minimal effort, significantly reducing labour requirements, saving time, and minimizing post-harvest losses compared to traditional methods. Participants were also trained in the operation and basic maintenance of the equipment, ensuring ease of adoption.

Through such initiatives, NIF–India continues to promote grassroots innovations that reduce drudgery, enhance agricultural productivity, and support rural communities by fostering skill development and facilitating the dissemination of appropriate technologies.
