Crash Your Friends' WhatsApp Remotely with Just a Message...

A Vulnerability has been discovered in the wildly popular messaging app WhatsApp, which allows anyone to remotely crash WhatsApp just by sending a specially crafted message, two security researchers reported ‘The Hacker News’.
Two India based independent security researchers, Indrajeet Bhuyan and Saurav Kar, both 17-year old teenagers demonstrated the WhatsApp Message Handler vulnerability to one of our security analyst.
In a video demonstration, they showed that how a 2000 words (2kb in size) message in special character set can crash Whatsapp messenger app. Previous it was discovered that sending a huge message ( greater than 7mb in size) on Whatsapp could crash victim device and app immediately, but using this new exploit attacker only need to send a very small size (approx 2kb) message to the victim.
The worried impact of the vulnerability is that the user who received the specially crafted message will have to delete his/her whole conversation and start a fresh chat, because opening the message keeps on crashing WhatsApp unless the chat is deleted completely.
"What makes it more serious is that one needs to delete entire chat with the person they are chatting to in order to get back whatsapp work in normal," Bhuyan told THN in an e-mail.
According to the duo, the reported vulnerability has been tested and successfully works on most of the versions of Android Operating system including Jellybean, Kitkat, and all the below android versions.
Similarly, Any member of your WhatsApp group could intentionally send a specially crafted message to exit people from the group and delete the group. Also, for example, if I don’t want someone to keep records of my chat with them, then I can also send the same message exploit to the person.
The vulnerability has not been tested on iOS, but it is sure that all versions of WhatsApp including 2.11.431 and 2.11.432 are affected with this bug. Also the attack does not work on Windows 8.1.

They have also provided the Proof-of-Concept (PoC) video for the attack, users can watch above.
WhatsApp, bought by Facebook for $19 billion in February this year, has 600 Million users as of October 2014, and according to the researchers, an estimated number of users affected by the vulnerability could be 500 Million.
WhatsApp was in news recently for making end-to-end encryption on all text messages as a default feature in an effort to boost the online privacy and security of its users around the world. The app maker describe this move as the "largest deployment of end-to-end encryption ever.".

Hacking PayPal Account with Just a Click...........

The eBay owned popular digital payment and money transfer service, PayPal has been found to be vulnerable to a critical web application vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take control over users' PayPal account with just a click, affecting more than 156 millions PayPal users.
An Egyptian security researcher, Yasser H. Ali has discovered three critical vulnerabilities in PayPal website including CSRF, Auth token bypass and Resetting the security question, which could be used by cybercriminals in the targeted attacks.
Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF or XSRF) is a method of attacking a website in which an attacker need to convince the victim to click on a specially crafted HTML exploit page that will make a request to the vulnerable website on their behalf.
Mr.Yasser demonstrated the vulnerability step-by-step in the Proof-of-Concept (PoC) video using a single exploit that combines all the three vulnerabilities. According to the demo, using Paypal CSRF exploit an attacker is able to secretly associate a new secondary email ID (attacker's email) to the victim's account, and also reset the answers of the security questions from target account.
PayPal uses security Auth tokens for detecting the legitimate requests from the account holder, but Mr. Yasser successfully bypassed it to generate exploit code for targeted attacks, as shown in the video.
Yasser told The Hacker News, "I found out that the CSRF Auth is Reusable for that specific user email address or username, this means If an attacker found any of these CSRF Tokens, He can then make actions in the behave of any logged in user."

Once executed, the exploit will add attacker's email id to victim's account, which could be used to reset the account password using "Forgot Password" option from the Paypal website. But the attacker can not change the victim's password without answering the security questions configured by user while signing up.

Yasser found that another bug in PayPal allows him to reset the security questions and their answers of his choice, hence this facilitates him to bypass the PayPal security feature completely in order to reset the new password for the victim's account.
Paypal security team has patched the vulnerability following the Yasser's report via Bug Bounty Program. Three Month ago, Yasser found similar bug in eBay website that allowed hackers to hijack any eBay account in just 1 minute....

Don't cook your iPhone with Microwave oven!!!

There is an Internet hoax circulating around claiming users of Apple's IOS 8 can charge their iPhone by putting it in the microwave oven.

The hoax ad was posted in 4chan and stated "Wave is our latest and greatest addition to iOS8. Wave allows your device to be charged wirelessly through microwave frequencies. Wave can be used to quickly charge your device's battery using any standard household microwave"

I don't think anyone fall for this hoax. But it is funny to read the ad and tweets about it.

Last year, when iOS7 was first launched, some pranksters made a similar fake ad claiming updating to the iOS7 made phones waterproof. Many people reportedly fell for that hoax.
