Banks and NBFCs are facing several issues in implementing GST. Banking got varied nature of operations and they have presence all over India. This makes their GST compliance little complicated. Branches of the banking services are spread across states and it is difficult to administer GST because of the different adjudication authorities. These authorities differ in opinions in same topic. Banking sector faces several issues in terms of client profiles, services matrix, IT systems and operation to capture the data at both front and back end.

Banks need enhanced IT systems
Banks should be prepared with IT systems to comply with the data requirement for filing of GST returns. Retrieval and enrichment of transaction level data needs to be ensured. The systems should ensure compliance in all levels. System should handle state wise and transaction wise returns. Handling amendments, credit and debit notes of transactions, input credit details uploaded by the suppliers are done through the IT system. It should do data matching and reconciliations of input credits. System may be correcting incorrect data entry at branch level and generating invoices to clients. Similar IT systems may be required to other financial service sector like stock brokers, Nidhi etc. A securities broker needs to issue contract notes on a daily basis and the contract notes need to have a break up of the GST between central and state at the time of generating the contract notes. Also, the state level inputs can be claimed only against the state level output. Excella data analytics systems can enable NBFC, Nidhi and small banks in automating GST compliance through its data enrichment tools.
