^Google Adds 'Kotlin' As An Official Programming Language For Android ..

At its Google I/O 2017 developer conference, Google just announced that Android is getting official support for Kotlin programming language. Kotlin is now supported along with Java and C++.

Kotlin is developed by JetBrains, the same people who created IntelliJ. Note that Android Studio was built on the popular IntelliJ IDEA Java IDE. Google also shared it is partnering with JetBrains to move Kotlin into a nonprofit foundation.

Kotlin was first announced in July 2011, with version 1.0 arriving in February 2016. At that point, JetBrains committed to maintaining backwards compatibility for stable features from 1.0 forward.

For those who don’t know, Kotlin programming language is an open source project under Apache 2.0 license. Google calls it an awesome language which is brilliantly designed and mature. The company also adds that Kotlin will make Android development faster and fun.

The developers can download Kotlin plugin in Android Studio 3.0 and start playing with it.

Developers should also note that Kotlin compiler emits Java byte-code. Kotlin can call Java and vice-versa. This brings a flexibility to add as much as code one wants to the existing code.

Unlike the Swift programming language, which was an internal Apple project and then open sourced later, Google won’t own Kotlin. The language will continue to be developed and supported by Jet Brains — the company is partnering with Google to set up a non-profit Kotlin foundation to shepherd the language. Kotlin will also continue to target other platforms: the language is designed to run as native code on iOS and Macs, and also compiles to JavaScript for web development.

Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26.2 Billion, LNKD shares jump 47% ...

LinkedIn CEO will remain CEO of the professional social network, and will report to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Under the terms of the acquisition, LinkedIn will maintain its "distinct brand, culture, and independence."

Microsoft Corp. snapped up LinkedIn Corp. for $26.2 billion in the largest acquisition in its history, betting the professional social network can rev up the tech titan’s software offerings despite recent struggles by both companies.

Mr. Nadella said today’s work is split between tools workers use to get their jobs done, such as Microsoft’s Office programs, and professional networks that connect workers. The deal, he said, aims to weave those two pieces together.

“It’s really the coming together of the professional cloud and the professional network,” Mr. Nadella said in an interview on Monday.

LinkedIn is the world’s largest and most valuable professional network and continues to build a strong and growing business. Over the past year, the company has launched a new version of its mobile app that has led to increased member engagement; enhanced the LinkedIn newsfeed to deliver better business insights; acquired a leading online learning platform called Lynda.com to enter a new market; and rolled out a new version of its Recruiter product to its enterprise customers. These innovations have resulted in increased membership, engagement and financial results, specifically:

1) 19 percent growth year over year (YOY) to more than 433 million members worldwide

2) 9 percent growth YOY to more than 105 million unique visiting members per month

3) 49 percent growth YOY to 60 percent mobile usage

4) 34 percent growth YOY to more than 45 billion quarterly member page views

5) 101 percent growth YOY to more than 7 million active job listings

For instance, connecting Office directly to LinkedIn could help attendees of meetings learn more about one another directly from invitations in their calendars. Sales representatives using Microsoft’s Dynamics software for managing customer relationships could pick up useful tidbits of background on potential customers from LinkedIn data.

Microsoft also sees opportunities in Lynda.com, a channel for training videos that LinkedIn bought for $1.5 billion last year. Microsoft will be able to offer Lynda’s videos inside its own software, such as Excel spreadsheets.

Shares of LinkedIn surged 47 percent after the announcement to near $193, while Microsoft's stock was down 3.2 percent. Trading in Microsoft had been halted briefly for news pending before the announcement of the all-cash deal.

The deal is expected to be completed this calendar year.

^ This is a major victory for every internet user of India ...

In a press conference this afternoon, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has issued the ‘Prohibition of Discriminatory Tariffs for Data Services Regulations, 2016’ that upholds net neutrality.

The chief telecom regulatory body has ruled that:

• Service providers cannot offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content.

• A service provider may, however, reduce tariff for accessing or providing emergency services.

• A penalty of Rs. 50,000 a day will be levied for discriminatory tariffs charged by service providers.

• TRAI may review these regulations after a period of two years.

The country witnessed one of its most constructive public discourses which was non-violent as well as circumspect. Despite majority of the replies being sent through Facebook there was a considerably large number of replies that came from other forums as well which has not happened before. This consultation paper had one of the largest number of respondents over 24 lakhs which speak volumes about the quality and reach of the net neutrality debate.

The major contribution to the debate were from All India Bakchod(AIB) and E-commerce websites and also from individual personalities like Nikhil Pahwa, Mahesh Murthy and others. Our joined efforts have successfully protected net neutrality and the open web in India. At the same time, we wish to thank the TRAI for coming up with a public consultation process before taking important steps such as this. It is definitely due to TRAI’s innovative process that public opinion has managed to defeat the pressure from corporate giants.

Indian govt to have its own operating system for official use. A highly improved and secured version of BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions) has been developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing). Indian government is all set to release BOSS this month.
The new OS is believed to have been launched to overcome the vulnerabilities that exist in government cyberspace resulting in a number of countless attacks by hackers.
BOSS, which is a linux distribution, is developed with the help of Gujarat Technical University, DRDO and some other private computer manufacturers.

Bharat Operating System Solutions GNU/Linux distribution developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) derived from Debian for enhancing the use of Free/ Open Source Software throughout India. BOSSGNU/Linux - a key deliverable of NRCFOSS has upgraded from Entry level server to advanced server. It supports Intel and AMD x86/x86-64 architecture. ^ Android 6.0 Marshmallow ...

Google has finally taken the wrapper off the next version of Android and revealed it will be known as Android 'Marshmallow'. More importantly, it's also been given the version number 6.0, rather than the point update many of us were expecting.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is an upcoming release of the Android mobile operating system, to be released in Q3 2015 ("likely September"), with Preview 3 released on August 17, 2015. First unveiled at Google I/O on May 28, 2015, Marshmallow will focus primarily on incremental improvements and other feature additions.

Features ...

1) Android Pay ..
With the arrival of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, Google is revamping its own mobile payment service it actually introduced back in 2010 with Android Gingerbread. Compatible with phones running on Android KitKat and above, Android Pay will let you walk into stores and tap on an NFC terminal to pay for products.

2) Google Now on Tap ..
Google's virtual assistant is arguably one of Android's best features and it's going to get even better in Android 6.0. Now you'll be able to get useful, contextual information on anything you have currently running on your phone screen. So if you're watching a video on YouTube, simply hold down on the home button to find out more information about someone in the video. Another example where on Tap could be useful is getting restaurant suggestions when you're talking about going out for dinner in a text message conversation.

3) App permissions ..
We've all been there before. You go to install an app in the Google Play store and you're met with a long list of things the developer wants access to. To make it easier for users to keep track of what phone features can be accessed, permissions will now sit in specific categories like Sensor, Camera and Location.

4) Standardised fingerprint support ..
While fingerprint technology is not really widespread on Android phones, Google is opening the necessary APIs to allow developers to add fingerprint support with any app. That improved biometric authentication will also be extended to Android Pay to authorise payments, making it work a lot like Apple Pay.

5) Doze ..
In a bid to hopefully give your battery life a boost, Android Marshmallow is introducing a feature that recognise when the Android device is in a rested state to help conserve power. Google says it has tested it with a Nexus 9 and claims it can help make battery life last two times longer in standby mode by using fewer background services. If you're worried about missing out on alarms and incoming instant messages, Doze will still allow those notifications and modes to be activated.

6) Direct Share and Floating Toolbar ..
Two small but nontheless smart new additions, Direct Share can learn who you share content with frequently from different apps and turn the process into the press of a single button. With the floating toolbar, it'll also improve the way you can copy and paste content from web pages or documents.

7) Simplified volume controls ..
The redesigned volume controls in Lollipop were not universally loved and Google has listened. It's tidier and now also includes the ability to individually monitor audio from anything making sounds, whether that music or alarms.

8) Chrome Custom tabs ..
In a move to improve web experience on phones, the new Chrome Custom Tabs is one for developers. When an app wants to push you into a web view, app developers can now use custom tabs to load on top of the app so you don't need to open another browser. Those tabs support automatic sign ins, saved passwords, multi-process security and autofill.

Android M review ...

With the Developer Preview now available, we've been able to flash onto our Nexus handset and give it a thorough going over. Now it's early days for the new version of Android, and we've seen a number of crashes usually in relation to connecting to Wi-Fi networks that have intermittent or limited connections, but generally the new Android is pretty stable. All the new features haven't been integrated yet, most notably there's no Now on Tap etc ...

When will Android 6.0 Marshmallow be available? ...

Like previous versions of Android, we can expect it to roll out to phones and tablets in the Autumn. Currently, developers can play around with the final Android Marshmallow builds on the Nexus 5 and 6 smartphones plus the Nexus 9 and Nexus Player set-top box.

^ Google is Now Part of a New Company Alphabet ...

So you thought Google was a sprawling Silicon Valley entity with a frightening amount of power…

Meet "Alphabet" .... Larry Page just announced this new parent company for Google and all of its various offspring. Speaking for his fellow Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Page called the creation of Alphabet “a very exciting new chapter in the life of Google.” He means that it’s the next step to making the search giant into an even more giant corporation.

(Alphabet’s CEO Larry Page said in his blog post ...

"Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable. So we are creating a new company, called Alphabet. I am really excited to be running Alphabet as CEO with help from my capable partner, Sergey, as President").

The new umbrella company will include Google spinoffs like its health effort, Life Sciences, and longevity research arm, Calico. The mad scientist paradise known as X lab will also become its own company, as will Nest and Fiber. Meanwhile, Ventures, Capital, Sidewalk, and the drone-delivery service Wing will also become separate companies under Alphabet’s umbrella. As for Google itself, the SEC filing states, “Under the new operating structure, its main Google business will include search, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and Android and the related technical infrastructure (the ‘Google business’).”

As part of the move, Page, Google's founder and CEO, will take over as CEO of Alphabet (the company's URL will appropriately be ABC.xyz). Sundar Pichai, Page's top deputy at Google, will take over as CEO of Google.

For now, Alphabet’s creation appears to be a restructuring that will affect Google’s growth going forward. Page explained that Google will be slimmed down as spinoffs become their own companies. He also announced that Sundar Pichai—the former head of Android, Chrome, and Apps—will become CEO of Google. Page and Brin will ascend to the top two positions at Alphabet as the parent company’s CEO and President, respectively. Google stock will become Alphabet stock, and everyone will be confused about this means for a little while.

"We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity’s most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search! We also like that it means alpha-bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for!" . Page Said ...

Beyond that, the change continues a long, gradual trajectory of freeing up Page from day-to-day management of Google, allowing the founder to think more broadly about the company's future. It also may just appeal to the vanity of top execs within the company: Suddenly there are a few more C-suite opportunities.

The move comes at a time when Wall Street is once again in love with Google, following a strong earnings report and the hiring of a well-regarded CFO. Investors appeared to cheer the introduction of Alphabet: Google stock jumped 5% in after hours trading following the announcement.

^ Apple Just Canceled The Right Click ...

Years ago, when Steve Jobs decided that mice needed only one button, Apple had a problem. While Mac users were busy clicking on things all over the screen, PCs added a second button, the right click, in order add a second layer of interaction, a feature that eventually forced Cupertino’s hand and created the control-click. Even as mice added button after button and trackpads still featured right clicks, Apple kept on keeping on with a single, monolithic trackpad. Until today. Today, it seems, is the day that Jobs’ one-button vision is being finally realized.

Phil Schiller’s description of Force Touch was pretty nerdy. Essentially, instead of adding a pivoting sheet of glass, the company created a system that enables variable resistance for each click. That means you can either tap the touchpad or give it a harder press in order to bring up the functions that were usually associated with the right-click. While it’s not clear whether Force Touch actually brings up the control-click menu, it’s an important addition to the MacBook mythos.

In addition to the sensors, the tactile feedback adds even more human-computer interaction to the process of clicking on the screen. While none of this is particularly exciting to non-Macheads, it’s clear that the Jobs Mission is still top-of-mind at Apple, an important consideration as the company moves forward into the next decade.

Google: Gtalk will be no more operational after February 16th.

Google’s Gtalk messenger platform is drawing its last few breaths and will go dead after 16th February. While the messenger has become very popular amongst millions of users its not that Google is putting end to its Messenger services but is upgrading it to Google Hangouts Messenger services for Windows users.

Gtalk was already made unavailable for download from Google after it announced last year that the end is nearer. after which users looking to download Gtalk were redirected to Google Hangouts download page.

Earlier this week Google once again notified Gtalk users to upgrade to Google hangout coz the app will go unoperational after Feb 16th.

While Gtalk’s interface has become very familiar to many of its users not to forget mentioning that it loads better than Google Hangout on slow internet connections. Another problem is that it has also become lifeline for lower end older smartphone users because these phones dont support a all frills laden Google Hangout App. But Google seems to have other plans and security has become a major issue Google so it altogether dumping the Gtalk Messenger.

Google Hangout which only operates with its Chrome browser will also bind its users to use Google Chrome if they want to use the service, not to forget WhatsApp Recently getting on PC’s to give Google’s Messenger service a strong competition.

Major features that Google Hangout provides like Google Video Hangouts and Group Video Chats means that it is still a long way for others to give any sort of direct competition to it.

The notification from Google says the Gtalk app will go dead for the Windows user it does not say anything about users working on a different operating system than the Windows. Maybe Google plans to keep GChat live on other operating systems for the time being.
