Word out of Korea is that both local tech giants, Samsung and LG, will each be unveiling flexible display devices in October.
Samsung has officially confirmed a curved display smartphones, reportedly a Galaxy Note 3 Active model, which could be announced as soon as next week. LG meanwhile, are taking it a step further with their new LG Z series (Z as in Z-axis), featuring a concave display, likely of fullHD resolution. The Z series flagship is allegedly already in production, and is expected to launch this month.

While both devices will feature unique, non-straight angle displays, they are not flexible per se, as internal components like circuit boards and batteries cannot be made bendable, yet. Current flexible OLED technology will allow displays which require less screen bezel, and will be unbreakable - hence the Active moniker attached to Samsung's upcoming device.
Both smartphones are expected to be released in limited quantities as neither manufacturer has the capabilities to mass produce flexible displays yet.

Android 4.4 screenshots surface, show off new camera UI

Google unveiled its latest Android build, version 4.4 KitKat exactly one month ago, and today we have some screenshots of exactly what's been updated.
As with the other incremental updates since version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the updates of the latest build are almost exclusively under the hood. Nevertheless, some of the latest inclusions are more noticeable, like the updated camera interface.
The leaked images are likely a bit dated - or Google simply hasn't gotten around to changing the build name - as there are several mentions of Key Lime Pie rather than KitKat.
In the Settings menu, you'll find new integration for a Printing and Payments system, which brings wireless NFC payment to the main Android architecture, rather than relying on third party apps. Looks like the same will be done with printer support. Then comes Miracast, which will let you screencast your device to a supported TV.

Like we said, UI changes are mostly minor, although animations are reportedly much smoother.
A few additional Google apps are set to come preloaded on KitKat - Drive and Keep. The first lets you access your documents on Google's cloud storage service, while Keep is used for note-taking.

The camera UI now features Instagram-like previews of your applied filters. There's also a print menu that allows you to save your image as a PDF, or print to a local or network printer. There are options for paper size, colors, orientation and number of copies.

Android 4.4 KitKat may become available as early as this month, with the release of the new Nexus 5.

The sun enters the sign Virgo (Kanya) when there is a conjunction of the moon and the sun. Regarding the Mahalaya Amavasya there is a lot mention in many ancient Hindu religious texts and inscriptions.

It is strongly believed that on this particular day the ancestors directly leave their abode and immediately come down to the world of mortals. This is done by them in order to occupy the houses of their beloved descendants.

It is to be largely noted that on every new-moon day, all the Hindus wholeheartedly offer oblation of water to all the departed soul in their household. Moreover, every year on the death anniversary of their ancestors, the prescribed rites are also dutifully performed with respect and dedication towards them. This is also known as Sraddha ceremony. In order to have a very special effect it is done during Mahalaya. It is strongly believed by the Hindus that due to a boon from Lord Yama, all the offerings given on this particular day will reach the departed souls.

The historical significance of Mahalaya Amasvasya is cited with Karna who is a renowned Hero in Mahabharata. He is largely regarded as a very generous man. In the battle field after his sudden death all those charity that he has wholeheartedly done while alive was immediately returned to him in a surprising manner of hundred fold in the heaven. It is to be noted that he had just silver and gold with him. In his custody there was no food. It is to be remembered that during his life time, he had been very generous only with silver and gold. He wholeheartedly prayed to the Lord of death Yama. He was sent back to earth just for those fourteen days in order to make up this.

Mahalaya, the day Devi (Goddess) Durga is believed to have descended to earth to annihiliate all evils. Mahalaya is the day when Pitri Paksha ends and Devi Paksha starts. So Mahalaya is two dynamic festival. I will share detail about Mahalaya below.

Pitri-Paksha: It is also known as Shola Shraddha or sixteen Shraddhas or food offerings. According to numerous Puranas of Hindu, during this period a shraddha performance by son is compulsory to make sure the ancestors soul goes to heaven. This is in Bengali called "Torpon". This shraddha is performed during the pre-dawn or dawn time in the river. The son remembers his ancestors by propitiation and food offerings and also takes holy dips in the river. This performance is also known by Pinda Dana. This day is very significant for Bengalis.

Devi Paksha: Devi Paksha means the Goddess Period. Actually Devi Durga comes to earth seven days before the main puja takes place. From Mahalaya day the four day grand Durga Puja countdown begins. In Hindu tradition from New Moon to Full Moon of Bhadra the fifteen days period is known for Goddess Period or Devi Paksha. In this period Hindus believe the best time to do any sacred work. In northern India the nine day following the new moon of bhadra is called Navaratri.

According to Purana on this day Lord Rama worshipped Devi Durga before departing for Lanka to rescue Devi Sita from demon Ravana. Traditionally Durga Puja used to performed in spring time by King Suratha. That is why it is also known as Basanti Puja. But Lord Rama worshipped Devi Durga in autumn state that is why it is also known as Untimely Worshipping or Akaal 'Bodhan'.
Akaal Bodhan because the time Lord Rama worshipped Devi Durga at the time God and goddess were in awakened state.

On the last new moon day just before the Mahalaya, the idols or Durga Protima colored specially the eyes are shaped which is called "Chakshu Daana".

Another dimension can also be found to describe Mahalaya period. The legendary philanthropist of Mahabharata period, Karna use to donate gold and other wealth to people. He was so charitable that he was also called as Data Karna. When he died, due to his good work done in the earth he got back those in thousand fold in heaven. Karna's soul was hungry by then and asked for food but he was served by gold and silver. He gets frustrated and asked the god of death Yama the reason. Yama replied throughout his whole life he had donated gold and silver only but never donated food to anyone even to his ancestors. Karna being afraid replied to Yama that, he was unaware of his ancestors. He was then sent back to earth by Yama for 14 days, where Karna fed the poor people and made offer to his ancestors. After 14 day period ends he returned back to heaven and was served by huge amount of food. So these 14 days are honored as Mahalaya Period.

While other companies were bracing for war at the IFA 2013 expo and lining up their latest phablets, LG was counting down to the G2 launch. The Koreans did a few cool tricks to promote the beast, like shooting the Earth from the stratosphere, but the G2 is an attention grabber even without the expensive PR.
LG G2 is powered by the best mobile chipset available, it has a beautiful big screen with almost no bezel to speak of, and it even runs the latest Android version. But that's not what the LG G2 is going to be known for. No, the G2 will be remembered as one of the few devices to bring true hardware innovation for the first time in many years. While most makers just keep on pushing the number of CPU cores or go overboard with screen size, LG takes a fresh approach to how you interact with a big-screen phone in the most natural way.

With high-end smartphones going bigger by the day, the hardware design is struggling to keep up and slowly turning into a disadvantage. The lock key at the top of the HTC One is nearly impossible to reach, volume rockers keep switching sides and places until the moment you start guessing instead of knowing what you are clicking on? And this is just the beginning! How about those lockscreens with unlocking routines, which are getting increasingly weirder?
We guess we didn't realize how things could've been different until we actually get to see them from a fresh perspective. The LG G2 revolutionizes the Power/Lock key by putting it on the back of the device at the direct disposal of your index finger. You can unlock the screen with just a double tap too. No more finger stretching, using the other hand or doing some magical air gestures.
Now that we are done enjoying the new way of making things happen, we should also say a few words about the spectacular hardware the LG G2 is running on. The smartphone uses a brilliant 5.2" IPS+ display with great colors, contrast, viewing angles and very low reflectiveness. The G2 has the most powerful chipset on the market too - the Snapdragon 800 with a quad-core 2.3GHz Krait 400 processor, Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Finally, there is the 13MP camera with optical image stabilizations and full HD videos shot in 60 fps. And these are merely the most obvious things! Here comes the complete list of features.
Key features
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
Quad-band 3G with HSPA; Penta-band LTE cat3
5.2" 16M-color 1080p True HD IPS Plus FullHD capacitive touchscreen
Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display protection
Android OS v4.2.2 Jelly Bean; LG Optimus UI
Quad-core 2.26 GHz Krait 400 CPU, 2 GB RAM, Adreno 330 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset
13 MP autofocus camera with LED flash, geotagging, Intelligent Auto, optical image stabilization, Time catch shot, smart shutter and VR panoramas
1080p video recording @ 60fps with continuous autofocus and stereo sound; HDR mode, Dual recording, optical image stabilization
2.1 MP front-facing camera, 1080p video recording
32GB of built-in storage, 24GB user-available
microUSB port, USB host support, USB on-the-go, SlimPort TV-out
Bluetooth v4.0
NFC
Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Direct and DLNA
GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS
Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
Stereo FM radio with RDS
Voice commands
Multi-tasking with mini-apps and optional transparency (QSlide)
Accelerometer and proximity sensor
Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic
Non-replaceable 3000mAh Li-Po battery
IR emitter for remote control of home appliances
Quick Window cases available at launch
Main disadvantages
The hardware controls at the back take some time getting used to
Below average loudspeaker performance
No microSD slot
Non-replaceable battery
Wow, what a long list of features! And look at those few alleged flaws - we are already quite used to seeing droids launching without an additional memory slot and with the battery sealed in. Somehow, the manufacturers managed to convince us - users - that we don't actually need to worry about replacing the battery. And while that may be ok for some, the 24GB of inbuilt storage is likely to run out at one point on a device that records 1080p videos at 60 fps.

It remains to be seen whether the performance of the phone in the other departments will make up for that deficiency. Without further ado we drop all introductions and continue with unboxing the LG G2.

01/10/2013

The LG G2 is the new pretender to the Android smartphone throne and one that enters the fray with a bang. Well aware of the challenge ahead - and determined to make it an opportunity - the G2 comes duly armed. Four Krait 400 cores on the Snapdragon 800 chipset, a 13 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, insanely thin bezels to a fabulous 5.2" FullHD screen are only some of the G2's highlights.
The LG G2 already made the Samsung Galaxy S4 sweat to stay in the match but now a different kind of foe is on its path. The HTC One will challenge the LG G2 with a metal-clad gapless body, BoomSound speakers and Beats Audio as well as Sense UI that moves away from Android dogmas and aims to bring your precious content right on the homescreen.

On the face of it, the HTC One should stand little chance against the much fresher LG G2. The latter has had precious time to prepare and draw from the latest in hardware. Belonging to the same school of thought of nothing-goes-in-and-nothing-gets-out (read battery and memory cards), the HTC One offers a better choice of storage. It's still one of the hottest-looking pieces of hardware this season too, so even the creative LG G2 may have a hard time matching it.

LG G2 over the HTC One
Bigger 5.2" display, thinner bezels
Same size overall for a much bigger screen, slimmer and exactly the same weight
More powerful chipset with better graphics
Better, higher-res camera
1080p video recording at 60 fps
Bigger battery

HTC One over the LG G2
Front-mounted stereo speakers with impressive output
Higher-quality finish
32/64GB of storage vs. 16/32 GB
Cheaper to get

Currently a brand new 16GB version of the LG G2 will set you back some 500 Euro, which coincidentally will also get you the base 32 gig model of the HTC One. That's something to definitely consider, along with the fact that a 32GB LG G2 will cost you 30% more than the 32GB HTC One.
The LG G2 gives you the obvious advantage of having a bigger display on basically the same-size chassis. Sure, the LG flagship is slightly wider, but it's not necessarily noticeable. What's more, there's that Snapdragon 800 to consider, which is way faster than the Snapdragon 600 inside the HTC One. It handles 1080p video recording at 60fps (the HTC One offers 720p@60fps) and literally rages through the benchmarks, although, in day to day usage, you won't exactly call the HTC One slow either.
Another thing to consider is the camera. The LG G2's camera is optically stabilized, just like the One's, but offers a higher resolution sensor, which produces clearly superior quality. To make up for it, the HTC One has the cool Zoe additions, which make the camera a lot more fun than on most phones.
We'll take a closer look at the hardware of both phones a little later in this review but at first glance it's absolutely certain both manufacturers had different approaches in this department. The LG G2 is all about maximizing the screen to the point you feel like you're holding nothing but display. The HTC One brings two front-facing stereo speakers for a more immersive media-playing experience. The cold hard, precision-cut aluminum body feels nicer than the glossy and slippery plastics of the G2.

LG G2 and HTC One at HQ
Wherever your allegiance lies, this is a battle of old and new. The HTC One hasn't got the hardware chops to compete against the more powerful, newer LG flagship. It's a more straightforward device that seeks a balance between screen and sound, pixel count and size, locked-in mentality and looks. It has a custom skin that doesn't want to be compared to Samsung's TouchWiz but instead gives you BlinkFeed.
The LG G2 will have to work hard and take the HTC One seriously. The One has already won the hearts of many and with impeccable and standard-setting audio on top of the standard flagship-grade equipment. So, as we move on with this comparison, will be testing every facet of performance and strive for the most in-depth coverage of each and every worthwhile spec.
