iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus First Impressions
*************************************************

Design, storage and performance
========================
Most of the noticeable changes are under the hood, but there are aesthetic changes worth noting. The new black finishes are nice to look at, particularly the shiny jet black. The jet black finish, though, is a fingerprint magnet. But at the end of the day, many people are likely to cover the finishes up with cases.

As far as weight and width, the phones feel about the same as their predecessors, though you can tell they're a hair lighter if you directly compare the new phones to the old ones.

Apple also redesigned the home button to be a button in name only; it's now a pressure-sensitive disc that uses vibrations to feel like a button. Users can customize the strength of the buzz to make it feel more or less clicky. The faux button, particularly on the lowest setting, can feel a little muddy, and at first, I really didn't like how it felt. But after two days and some adjusted settings, I almost didn't notice anymore.

One improvement could be a big deal to every iPhone user who's ever complained about running out of space or missed a critical photo because they didn't have room on their phone to take it. Apple has doubled the storage on the base models of the new iPhones, which finally brings Apple up to par with its closest competitors in this area. A base model iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus now has 32 GB of storage instead of 16 GB. You can only get a jet black iPhone with either 128 GB or 256 GB of storage.

And those who may have worried that they weren't going to get a speed or processing boost from the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6s can rest easy. Apps load snappily and without lag.

How much water can these phones stand?
Apple redesigned the home button in part to make the phone more water resistant. The phone can withstand about three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. But that is certainly not recommended.

Although the iPhone is able to withstand a quick dip in the sink or (as can happen) in the toilet, it's not exactly waterproof. It has a lower water resistance rating than Samsung's Galaxy S7 line, which delights in showing off its resistance to water fountains and champagne in its commercials.

Basically, all Apple's water resistance means is that you don't have to weep if your phone falls in a puddle. (Dropping my units in the sink was a serious test of my nerves.) But if these phones get wet, you still can't completely brush that off. Apple, in fact, recommends that you don't plug the phone in for several hours if the power port takes a bath.

Battery life
Both phones have been designed to improve battery life, with the inclusion of two efficiency processing cores alongside Apple's existing performance cores, which allow the phone to use less power for the same processes. The iPhone 7 Plus is supposed to be a battery powerhouse, with Apple claiming it will get an hour more of battery life compared with the iPhone 6s Plus.

In practical terms, both of the new phones can easily make it through a day of regular use without a problem. In my use, the iPhone 7 Plus could have lasted into the next morning if needed. But battery-intensive features such as following directions on a map would still probably have you reaching for the power cord sometime before bed.

Overall, when it comes to performance, if you upgrade from the iPhone 6 or earlier, you will feel a big boost that may be worth the money. But iPhone 6s users can probably sit this upgrade out; the improvements aren't that big, unless you're really into upgrading your iPhone's camera.

Lights, camera, action
The camera is definitely the part of the iPhone that received the most attention in these upgrades. Apple now includes four flashes instead of two, meaning that, yes, you can have twice as much flash to take pictures as before.

Apple also added features that prevent you from taking pictures that are too shaky.

About that headphone jack
Not everything about these phones is all sunshine. The removal of the headphone jack - although not quite the apocalyptic event that many people seem to think it is - has serious drawbacks for consumer convenience.

Conclusion
----------------
In almost any other case, on almost any other phone, the loss of the headphone jack would be a deal-breaker, even with the excellent changes to other parts of the phone. But this is the iPhone, and with iOS, Apple has built an overall ecosystem that's hard to leave. So potential buyers have to think, first and foremost, about whether it will be more annoying to switch over to an Android phone with a port, or to have to use an adaptor on planes and in cars over the next few years. For some, the loss of the headphone jack may make it feel like Apple made the iPhone actively worse.

Unlock Windows 10's hidden, powerful GodMode tool
======================================

GodMode. The mere mention of the omnipotence-granting tweak should bring a smile to the face of veteran Windows tinkerers, and yes, the legendary hidden feature still works in the Windows 10 Preview.

GodMode essentially unlocks a centralized table of contents for all of Windows’ far-flung features and customization options, drawing all your options together into a single interface and sorting them by tweak types. Once you’ve basked in its glory, you’ll be hooked for life.

Activating it is easy: Just create a new folder and rename it to following:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Be sure to include the period after “GodMode”! And while this hack is known as GodMode far and wide, you can actually name this folder whatever you’d like by altering the “GodMode” portion of the string. Hassle-Free PC columnist Ian Paul names his Jedi Mode, as he explained in his longer look at the feature.
windows 10 godmode

The GodMode icon and folder in Windows 10.

Once you’re done and hit Enter, the icon should transform to mimic the Control Panel’s look. Open it to check out your customization options. You can move GodMode around your system the same way you would any other folder, if you don’t want it cluttering up your desktop.

Be sure to check out PCWorld’s guide to Windows 10’s best tips and tricks when you’re done exploring GodMode. What’s that? You haven’t even tried the Windows 10 Preview out yet? Here’s everything you need to know to get started, and a guide to the killer new features you’ll want to check out first.

Dropbox Brings Annotation Feedback Feature for Web Users
*********************************************************************
Dropbox has made it easier for users to work on the same document on the Web even when they are on the move. Users can now easily provide feedback on any document right at the spot they are referring to. The new Web feature is currently limited to Dropbox Business teams through the early access program.

Annotations would be offering Dropbox Web users "clear, focused feedback" as per the firm. To give feedback in a document, users can point and click anywhere inside the file preview or drag a rectangle over the area where they need to give a feedback.

As for the receivers, they can simply click on an annotation from the comments sidebar to directly jump to the right spot to view the comment in context. "This works even if a comment was added on an older version of the file - you can preview that version to see where the comment was originally left, so you don't have to worry about losing track of your comment history when you incorporate feedback," added the company blog post.

Dropbox says that annotations are available for almost all the document file types including pdf, photos, Microsoft Word, and Photoshop files that have previews on dropbox.com.

Last month Dropbox made its 'Paper' feature available for users. The document collaboration tool's interface is clean and simple. It aims to stand alongside other document collaboration applications such as Google Docs and Microsoft Office 365. Dropbox has not yet mentioned when it would bring Paper out of the beta stage and officially roll it out to users worldwide. It intends to make the platform more feature-rich and stable based on the feedback.

Google Launches New OnHub Wi-Fi Router Made by Asus
===============================================
Google, after launching its first OnHub Wi-Fi router in August this year, on Tuesday introduced the device's next generation model made by Asus. To note, TP-LINK made the first router.

The Asus OnHub Wi-Fi router is priced at $219.99 (roughly Rs. 14,300), $20 (roughly Rs. 1,300) more than its predecessor, and can be pre-ordered from Google's own online store, Amazon and Newegg. While Google and Amazon have not yet mentioned when the router would be shipped, Newegg clearly states the devices to start shipping on November 3.

Like the first router, the cylinder-shaped Asus OnHub links with the Google On app on Android and iOS devices. To recall, the app lets users know who is connected with the particular OnHub router and how much Internet data they are consuming. The new router brings the Wave Control feature, to boost the Wi-Fi speed for a particular device by simply waving a hand over the router.

In addition, Google promised to roll out first software update for the OnHub series of routers in the coming week. The update would bring several performance improvements, including a new smart antenna algorithm. Post update, the router would be able to select the "best combination of antennas to direct Wi-Fi to your devices," said Trond Wuellner, Group Product Manager, OnHub on company blog post. "The best part is, if you already have an OnHub, your router will automatically update when your network is quiet so it won't interrupt your connection," he added.

As for the specifications, the Asus OnHub with model name AC1900 is backed by a dual-core 1.4GHz processor, and features Bluetooth Smart and Wi-Fi 802.11ac connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port, Gigabit Ethernet LAN port, and a USB 3.0 port. It bears a speaker, and an LED light ring at the base indicating different network statuses with different colours, and a proximity sensor on top. As per the Newegg listing, the router delivers Internet speed of up to 1900Mbps as well.

Camera, 3760mAh Battery Launched
===================================================

The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 offers top-of-the-line specifications. The successor to the last year's Droid Turbo, comes with a 5.4-inch QHD (1440x2560) display. The company claims that the 'ShatterShield' display - which is made of an aluminium rigid core, flexible Amoled screen, and dual-layer touchscreen panels (redundancy in case one goes bad) - wouldn't break into pieces even when dropped on a slab of concrete.

The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 oct-core SoC paired with 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and comes in 32GB and 64GB storage options, both variants rocking a microSD card slot with up to 2TB capacity cards supports. There's a 3760mAh battery, which in addition to a claimed battery life of 2-days under "mixed use", also supports Quick Charging.

On the photography front, the handset comes with a 21-megapixel rear-camera with f/2.0 aperture and dual LED flash and Phase Detect Auto-Focus, and a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter with flash. In terms of software, the Motorola Droid Turbo 2 runs Android 5.1.1. The single-SIM capable Turbo 2 supports 4G LTE (Cat 4), 3G, CDMa, Wi-FI and other standard connectivity options.

(Also see: Motorola Droid Turbo 2 vs. Motorola Droid Maxx 2)

Much like other Droid devices, the Droid Turbo 2 will be exclusively sold on Verizon Wireless network in the States. The carrier will be selling the Motorola Droid Turbo 2 at a price point of $624 (roughly Rs. 40,600) and $720 (roughly Rs. 47,000 retail) off contract for the 32GB and 64GB variants respectively. There's no word on international availability just yet, though it is likely to launch in other markets as the Turbo 2, similar to what we saw last year with the Moto Turbo.

The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 will be available in the United States from October 29 in a trade-in offer for up to $300 off on the upgrade to the new Droid Turbo 2. The company says that it would also accept smartphones with cracked displays. As previously rumoured, the company is bringing its Moto Maker phone customisation program to the Droid-branded smartphone. Motorola says that it will provide users with more than 1,000 ways to design their phone, also giving them the option to select materials ranging from ballistic nylon to genuine Horween pebbled leather.

Facebook has figured out why it’s draining your iPhone battery
*******************************************************************************

After getting called out for excess battery use in its iOS app, Facebook is releasing some updates to fix the problem.

The first update, available today, solves a “CPU spin” issue that Facebook found in its network code. “A CPU spin is like a child in a car asking, ‘Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?’ with the question not resulting in any progress to reaching the destination,” Facebook engineering manager Ari Grant wrote. “The version released today has some improvements that should start making this better.”

Facebook also identified an issue related to video playback. In some cases, leaving the Facebook app after watching a video causes a silent audio track to keep playing in the background, similar to how music apps are supposed to function. In effect, the app is using up resources without actually doing anything useful. Grant said Facebook will be solving this problem by removing background audio completely. (It’s unclear if this fix is available in today’s update.)

Facebook’s battery woes became a hot topic last week, when Circa co-founder Matt Gilligan documented the issues in a post on Medium. PixelEnvy blogger Nick Heer responded by calling Facebook’s actions “user-hostile,” while Federico Viticci of MacStories said the company was being “shady” and showing “a deep lack of respect for iOS users.”

Facebook’s response suggests that the battery problems were a mere oversight. “We are committed to continuing to improve the battery usage of our app and you should see improvements in the version released today,” Grant wrote.

Why this matters: Facebook is the most popular mobile app in America, and the current 2nd-ranked free app in the App Store (behind only Facebook Messenger), so any battery drain issues could be affecting tens of millions of users. While it’s hard to understand how Facebook let these issues slip by, at least the company is listening to the tech community and making fixes now.
