In the hustle-bustle of their city, Mumbaikars often seek a safe haven. Come evening time, bars (especially the musical kind!) come alive when blues bands sing evocatively in call-and-response, dispelling worry through familiar rhythms. The Mahindra Blues Festival 2023 poster encompasses this love for the genre and recreates an environment in which we have found a home.

My last illustration for for their Illuminations exhibit in San Francisco looking at the theme of ‘Nature Knows Best’. This one illustrates changes from early human history, when we were inextricably part of nature. With expanded cities and industries, we’ve created barriers to separate the human world from the natural world.
Swipe for details 👉🏼
*
Many of the narratives we spin around the separation of humans from nature are based more in our comfort than our facts. The result is a growing number of endangered species, changing climate, invasive species permanently altering ecosystems, habitat loss, and a general disconnect between humanity and the natural world. Thoughtfully reintegrating our practices, technologies, and designs with nature can help support all life on earth.

My 3rd (and personal favourite!) illustration for for their Illuminations exhibit in San Francisco looking at the theme of ‘Nature Knows Best’. Swipe for details 👉🏼 This one illustrates how matter that one being disposes provides sustenance for another. Ecosystems thrive on balance, reciprocity, diversity, and cycles.
*
Nature has been doing research and development on sustainable living systems for 3.8 billion years, and the result is diverse, circular, zero-waste ecosystems. Humans have broken from this pattern in recent centuries, which has resulted in growing waste, pollution, and resource exploitation that carries dire consequences for all life on earth. To restore balance and reduce harm, our best path forward may be to study the principles of adaptable, circular ecosystems, while leveraging the transformative alternatives that many plant species offer in the development of new materials and consumables.

Another tribute to my beautiful city: भूमि, explores the warmth of the scarce soil beneath our feet, which still teams with the vibrancy and resilience of the people of Mumbai. The mural is sprinkled with elements of ‘s rich sporting history and allows passer-by’s to find new ones with each visit.

My 2nd illustration for for their Illuminations exhibit in San Francisco looking at the theme of ‘Nature Knows Best’. Swipe for details 👉🏼 This one looks studies how many societies mimic earth’s processes (geomimicry) without adjusting for finite resources. By more intentionally leveraging insights and resources from non-living systems, we can craft more sustainable living systems.
*
Since we first began to carve tools by mimicking the natural process of erosion through whittling, we’ve used geologically-inspired techniques to aid our production and manufacturing. But what works for non-living systems won’t always work for living systems, at least not without some careful planning. Geomimicry has largely shaped our industrial world, but when it depends on the forced extraction of natural resources, it can degrade the natural world.

Seemed appropriate after this blue Sunday to post about this blue beauty in Trivandrum : titled Veḷḷaṁ (വെള്ളം), this geometric mural portrays the city's urban plan, accentuated by its waterways. ‘Veḷḷaṁ’ is a compelling visual narrative of Trivandrum's harmonious coexistence of urbanity and nature. A striking purple line, consistent with murals I painted in Mumbai and Bhopal, signifies a harmonious link between India's urban identities, creating a nationwide artistic tapestry.

A huge thank you to , and for trusting me with this. Painting in blue is always a nightmare but has the best blues I’ve ever used. 💙

Diving back into the Instagram game after a while with a series of my most detailed illustrations till date. I drew these for for their Illuminations exhibit in San Francisco (!) looking at the theme of ‘Nature Knows Best’. Swipe for details 👉🏼

The first of 4, this one looks as water as the connective tissue of nature. Through rivers, lakes, oceans, and the atmosphere, the whole world is entangled. That connectedness creates an integrated tapestry where life can thrive, but it's also marked by fragility: changes to one element can have ripple effects on the entire system.
*
For instance, as global temperatures rise, glaciers melt, which increases sea levels, which damages coastal regions. Rising CO2 in the atmosphere results in more uptake of CO2 by oceans, which lowers the pH, creating inhospitable waters. And mineral and micronutrient-dense dust from deserts around the world are carried by winds over the oceans to fertilize the Amazon rainforest. Everything effects everything.

My top “pinch-me” project of this year- a huge thank you to , and for trusting me with this one.
*
Titled प्रवाह or 'Pravaah', which means:
1. Current; flow; course, or
2. The pouring of ashes into a holy river,
my mural represents the delicate balance between water’s life-giving properties and its symbolic association with mortality. On one hand, it sustains the life force (प्राण / ‘praan’), serving as a fundamental element for growth, nourishment, and vitality. It also symbolizes cleansing and rejuvenation of the mind, body, and soul. On the other hand, water also represents the passage of time and the impermanence of life. Its ceaseless flow echoes the transient nature of existence, reminding us of life's fragility.
*
I’m especially proud of this one because it is the first one that I have painted ‘𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚’ - I emphasise alone, because I’ve come to realise that the act of muralling is never solitary. I was surrounded by a group of amazing curators, production staff, cheerleaders, tour guides and artists, all of whom made the experience more amazing than I could have imagined. Even though I was the painting till the last minute (this seems to be a trend with me all of a sudden) - I wasn’t stressed because of the constant support of this amazing team 💙❤️

Drew this piece titled Mumbai मसाला for - it’s an exploration of home: a hurricane of dabbas, chai, and mirchi… and the Mumbaikars who have somehow learned to live in its eye. By presenting elements of a familiar metropolis in an unexpected composition, viewers are transformed into flaneurs: wandering through an unknown yet comfortable urban landscape. The vibrant colour palette and interwoven forms are an expression of the calibrated chaos inherent in the city. Ultimately, the piece is a holistic representation of the people who live and love Mumbai.

IN FULL BLOOM: Loved being one of the 5 creative forces who reimagined this seasons trends for ‘s February 2023 issue. I went with something stylistically new for this one and it really took as long as it looks like it did 😅 but I also don’t remember the last time I enjoyed drawing something this much! Sometimes, I feel that I’ve become too comfortable with my current style so stepping out of my comfort zone to draw with an unpredictable outcome reminded me of why I started illustrating in the first place. Thank you and for the opportunity and trust!

Unusually, I am posting the work in progress images of this mural after the final reveals. But nothing about the process of painting this one was ‘usual’ so why not? 🤷🏻‍♀️
More than anything else I have ever drawn, this one has a piece of my heart and soul. 2 of the most challenging and exciting weeks of my short creative career - it changed the way I approach my entire practice.
*
It also reminded me of how important it is to have a supportive team ( and Krishna), a strong group of amazing friends who want to paint for therapy - their own and mine ( , , and ), an organisation that just wants to make a city more beautiful ( , , , , , and team) and some paps to capture you making a mess ( , and team).
