When everyone else is going well over the speed limit, they chose to slow down on the AI superhighway. And they may well be right.
MarketWatch reports that investors are rewarding Apple for their discipline in AI investments over their "Magnificent Seven" peers. These companies including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft have committed over $ 700 billion for data centers, increasing their debt and creating much lower free cash flow. This has led to a rout in their market values - dropping over $ 2.3 trillion across the group.
On the other hand, Apple has just had its best June quarter ever, with revenue of $109.4 billion and has seen its valuation grow over 20% to $ 5 trillion. Rather than setup their own AI infrastructure, Apple has chosen to partner with Google Gemini for the back end of its Siri platform. As a result, they remain focused on what they do best - simplifying & beautifying life!
Just goes to show that Think Different is not a slogan for them, they still believe it, long after their founder gave it to the world.
