Software Development Process

The development of a software program goes through seven stages.

It is helpful to remember the correct order of the software development process. Make up a mnemonic to help you remember using the letters: ADITDEM.

Analysis
Design
Implementation
Testing
Documentation
Evaluation
Maintenance
Analysis
The analysis stage is where the systems analyst will have a meeting with the client to have a clear understanding of the program's requirements.

This can be done by:

Looking at the current system
Interviewing clients
Issuing questionnaires
Looking at existing documentation
The outcome of this stage is called the Program Specification Document or Software Specification Document. This is a legally binding document which details the solution along with costs and time constraints.

Design
A good programmer will spend time at the design stage working out some of the important details of the program. The programmer will consider the user interface and the structure of the program.

Programmers use stepwise refinement, which is the method of taking a large problem and breaking it down into smaller more manageable problems. Stepwise refinement is also called top down design as the process is started as one problem at the top and worked down into smaller problems.

Two methods of design are pseudocode and structure diagrams.

Pseudocode is a numbered list that simplifies the main steps of a computer program before the code is written.

Example of Pseudocode

Problem: A teacher wishes to calculate the average mark of 5 end-of-topic tests and display the results.

Note: The difference between an algorithm and pseudocode.

An algorithm is a well defined sequence of steps that provides a solution for a problem.

Pseudocode is the language that the design is written in. Please note this is not proper English but not a High Level Language either.

You read pseudocode from top to bottom. You read a structure diagram from left to right.

Implementation
The actual program code is written at the implementation stage.

The structure diagram produced at the design stage splits the program down into smaller programs called procedures which can then be allocated to different programmers.

Good pseudocode allows the implementation stage to be relatively easy as each line of pseudocode can be translated into the code of the programming language being used.

The code is normally written in a high-level language, like Visual Basic or Java, and this is known as source code.

Computers only understand machine code therefore the source code has to be translated into binary instructions which the machine understands. Machine code can also be called executable code as it is executed by a computer.

Testing
Once the program has been written it is necessary to test the program for any errors. The testing stage can take quite a long time as the program must work under most conditions.

There are three types of testing:

Normal
Extreme
Exceptional
Test Data: Numbers 1 - 50

Extreme Data at the limits of what the program should handle. 1, 50

Documentation
Documentation is produced to assist users with the installation and features of the software.

Two items of documentation are produced.

User Guide - Provides information on the features of the software and may include a series of lessons called tutorials.

Technical Guide - Provides details on how to install the software and the system requirements for the program including type of processor, RAM and hard disk space.

Both guides may come as manuals or on a CD.

Evaluation
When the program is complete it needs to be evaluated. For Intermediate 2 Computing the three criteria that you must know for evaluation are:

Fit for purpose
User Interface
Readability
Fit for purpose

Does the program do everything it was supposed to do?
Does the program meet all the requirements in the program specification?
Does the program produce the correct results?
User Interface

Is the program easy to use?
Is it clear what the buttons, menus, etc do?
Are any instructions or error messages to the user clear and easy to understand?
Are fonts, screen colours and screen layouts consistent and easy to read?
Readability

Does the program have meaningful variable names?
Does the program have internal commentary?
Does the program have structure, e.g. indentation and blank lines?
Maintenance
Once the program has been distributed, maintenance of the software may be required.

There are three types of maintenance:

Corrective - Will fix any errors that are discovered in the program.

Perfective - Will add new features to the program.

Adaptive - Changes are made to the program to take account of new conditions so:

Program can work on new operating system
Program can work on new/different hardware

I need a desktop application programmed in Java, with source code (obviously)

one major requirement is being able to read and open for viewing PPT files (Powerpoint presentation slides), these files will be created and edited in MS PowerPoint, our app must just be able to open it for viewing on WIndows even in the machine does not have MS Powerpoint installed (all aspects of the PPT like animation and sounds, etc must be intact and readable)

Java Technology



Java is one of the leading programming languages used in software development to build secure, functional and scalable applications. The technology is well suited for network computing and business applications and certain e-business solutions. Java provides a platform for developing Desktop apps, Web apps as well as Mobile apps.

JEE Applications Development

The Java EE application development model incorporates Java programming language and the Java virtual machine. The flexibility, portability, security, open-source nature of JEE provides a strong basis for the JEE application model. Java EE has been designed to facilitate development of applications that make enterprise services available for customers.The Java EE application model clearly defines an architecture for implementing services as multi-tier applications that deliver the scalability, accessibility, and manageability needed by enterprise-level applications. The developers can rely on the JEE platform to provide solutions for developing multi-tier services.

The Java EE platform uses a distributed multitiered application model for enterprise applications. Here the approach is to divide application logic into components according to function. These differing component applications are ideally installed as JEE applications in different client machines, catering to varying tier-needs. Under the JEE environment, client-tier components run on the client machine, web-tier components run on the Java EE server, business-tier components run on the Java EE server and enterprise information system (EIS)-tier software runs on the EIS server. Java EE multitiered applications are generally considered to be three-tiered applications because they are distributed over three locations, namely client machines, the Java EE server machine, and the database or legacy machines at the back end.

JEE - Security

While other enterprise application tools require platform-specific security measures in each application, the advantage of Java EE security environment lies in the fact that it enables security constraints to be defined at deployment time. The Java EE platform makes applications portable to a wide variety of security implementations by sparing application developers the trouble of implementing security features. The Java EE platform provides standard access control definitions that are defined by the developer and interpreted when the application is deployed on the server. Java EE also provides standard login mechanisms so application developers do not have to implement these mechanisms in their applications.

JEE Components

Java EE applications are made up of components. A Java EE component is a self-contained functional software unit that is assembled into a Java EE application with its related classes and files and that communicates with other components. The Java EE specification defines the Java EE components: application clients and applets are components that run on the client, Java Servlet, Java Server Faces and Java Server Pages(JSP) technology components are web components that run on the server and Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) components are business components that run on the server.

Java EE components are written in the Java programming language and are compiled in the same way as any program in the language. A Java Applet is a small client application written in the Java programming language, getting executed in the Java Virtual Machine installed in the web browser. The client systems will require the Java Plug-in and a security policy file in order for the applet to successfully execute in the web browser. An application client runs on a client machine and provides a way for users to handle tasks that require a richer user interface than can be provided by a markup language. It typically has a graphical user interface (GUI) created from the Swing or the Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) API. Application clients directly access enterprise beans running in the business tier.

The server and client tiers include components based on the JavaBeans component architecture (JavaBeans components) to manage the data flow between an application client or applet and components running on the Java EE server. Another advantage is that Java EE application uses a thin browser-based client or thick application client.

It must be obvious and clear from the preceding paragraphs, that JEE offers a no-nonsense, developer friendly application development platform. JEE ranks above other peer application development platforms like .NET, in the matter of scalability,flexibility and interoperability. Providing adaptive and seamless architecture for developers, JEE fulfills the need for developing mult-tiered applications and distributed applications,without the complexity of writing individual codes for each set of business applications. JEE has arrived on the scene when developers were feeling the pinch of a reliable development platform. Today JEE has nudged out many other platforms by sheer virtuosity and ease of development.
