Windows 8 Tips and Tricks

1. Open from the lock screen

Windows 8 opens on its lock screen, which looks pretty but unfortunately displays no clues about what to do next.

It's all very straightforward, though. Just tap the space bar, spin the mouse wheel or swipe upwards on a touch screen to reveal a regular login screen with the user name you created during installation. Enter your password to begin.

2. Handle basic navigation

Windows 8's interface is all colourful tiles and touch-friendly apps. And if you're using a tablet then it'll all be very straightforward: just swipe left or right to scroll the screen, and tap any tile of interest.

On a regular desktop, though, you might alternatively spin the mouse wheel to scroll backwards and forwards.

And you can also use the keyboard. Press the Home or End keys to jump from one end of your Start screen to the other, for instance, then use the cursor keys to select a particular tile, tapping Enter to select it. Press the Windows key to return to the Start screen; right-click (or swipe down on) apps you don't need and select Unpin to remove them; and drag and drop the other tiles around to organise them as you like.

3. Group apps

The Start screen apps are initially displayed in a fairly random order, but if you'd prefer a more organised life then it's easy to sort them into custom groups.

You might drag People, Mail, Messaging and Calendar over to the left-hand side, for instance, to form a separate 'People' group. Click the 'minus' icon in the bottom right corner of the screen to zoom out and you'll now find you can drag and drop the new group (or any of the others) around as a block. Right-click within the block (while still zoomed out) and you'll also be able to give the group a name, which - if you go on to add another 20 or 30 apps to your Start screen - will make it much easier to find the tools you need.

Windows 8.1 now provides a special Customise mode with much the same functionality. Right-click an empty part of the Start screen, or swipe up, tap Customise, then drag and drop tiles or rename app groups to whatever you need.

4. Use the quick access menu

Right-click in the bottom-left corner (or hold down the Windows key and press X) for a text-based menu that provides easy access to lots of useful applets and features: Device Manager, Control Panel, Explorer, the Search dialog and more. Download the Win+X Menu Editor and you'll be able to further customise the list with programs of your own.

5. Find your applications

The Win+X menu is useful, but no substitute for the old Start menu as it doesn't provide access to your applications. Press Ctrl+Tab, click the arrow button at the bottom left of the Start Screen, or swipe up from the bottom of the screen and a list of your installed programs will appear. If you can't see what you need immediately, start typing an application name to search for it. Or, in Windows 8.1, click the arrow to the right of "Apps" to sort your programs by date installed, most used, category or name.

6. Make access easier

If there's an application you use all the time then you don't have to access it via the search system. Pin it to the Start screen and it'll be available at a click.

Start by typing part of the name of your application. To access Control Panel, for instance, type 'Control'. Right-click the 'Control Panel' tile on the Apps Search screen, and click 'Pin to Start'. If you're using a touchscreen, press and hold the icon, then flick down and select 'Pin to Start'.

Now press the Windows key, scroll to the right and you'll see the Control Panel tile at the far end. Drag and drop this over to the left somewhere if you'd like it more easily accessible, then click the tile to open the desktop along with the Control Panel window, and press the Windows key to return you to the Start screen when you're done.

7. Shut down

To shut Windows 8 down, just move the mouse cursor to the bottom right corner of the screen, click the Settings icon - or just hold down the Windows key and press I - and you'll see a power button. Click this and choose 'Shut Down' or 'Restart'.

In Windows 8.1, press Win+X, click 'Shut down or sign out' and select the option you need.

Some of the tricks available in previous versions of Windows still apply. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, for instance, click the power button in the bottom right-hand corner and you'll be presented with the same 'Shut Down' and 'Restart' options.

And if you're on the desktop, press Alt+F4 and you'll be able to choose 'Shut Down', 'Restart', 'Sign Out' or 'Switch User' options.

What to do if your iPhone gets lost?

If your iPhone is no longer in your possession, you might never see it again and the last thing you want to worry about is data security. Here's what you need to do.

Data theft can be just as damaging (if not more so) than losing a very expensive gadget. Your iPhone might be your pride and joy, but just imagine if someone gained access to your email, bank or social media accounts - wouldn't that potentially be worse?

Here's what to do when the unthinkable happens.

Use Find My iPhone

With the power of iCloud it's now possible to locate your device provided it still has access to some sort of data connection (cellular or Wi-Fi). This won't work if your device is not using the Find My Phone service (by default you have to opt out), has run out of battery or was last seen in Airplane Mode, but it's certainly worth a shot.

Head over to iCloud.com, login with your Apple ID and the same password you use to authorise app purchases and click on Find My iPhone. iCloud will attempt to locate your device, if found you can take a note of whether it's moving, whether it's down the back of the sofa or indeed whether it appears somewhere entirely different toyou last had it - in which case, it's probably been stolen.

Using iCloud.com it's possible to initiate a remote wipe of the phone, which will cause the phone to reset itself to factory settings and preserve your data. Do this by logging in, clicking on Find My iPhone then selecting the device and enabling Lost Mode. Don't forget to leave a message and a phone number in the hope that whoever took it might actually return it (or leave it somewhere, at least). If your phone has been stolen but remains traceable, you may want to hand the information over to the police. There have been a few exampleslaw enforcement have used Apple's Find My iPhone location data to recover stolen devices, though be prepared that this may not be the case.

If your phone has been updated to iOS 7, you've got another safety net in place in the form of Activation Lock. Even after wiping the device, it will require your own personal Apple ID and password to be usable. Until these credentials are provided, the phone will refuse to work as intended. It's useless to the thief, and not even Apple will unlock it.

You can tell if your phone has been updated to iOS 7 first and foremost by the graphical style. Apple introduced a new, cleaner interface. You can see the difference at-a-glance in the screenshot above (iOS 7 is on the right). You can also head over to Settings > General > About and look at the number under Version.

If you're reading this before your phone has been stolen (touch wood, it won't be) this is just another compelling reason to upgrade to the latest and greatest.

What if you can't find it?

If you can't find your phone (and for the very security conscious out there, even if you can) there are still a few things you should do to ensure your most important accounts remain safe.

Your personal email address is probably more important than you realise. It'syour password resets go, quite possibly your Apple ID is registered there and I bet you've got a bank account or similar financial service that uses it too. Access to this (and any, connected work email addresses could be just as devastating) should be revoked immediately upon noticing your phone has gone walkies.

Changing your password is often enough to require a re-authentication for your various devices, though if you're using an application-specific password for logging in (such as those provided with Gmail's two-factor authentication) then you can just revoke access under security settings.

Twitter and Facebook (among others) integrate with iOS 7 too. Revoke Twitter access by visiting Settings > Apps on Twitter's main website (above), then clicking Revoke next to each entry. If you have core integration that won't allow you to revoke access, simply change your main Twitter password and your phone's login will then be outdated. Facebook's approved apps can be revoked under Account Settings > Apps (below). It's especially important you do this as soon as physically possible if you were walking around without a passcode lock.

Onceaccount access has been revoked, you'll probably want to cross your fingers that the thief or police are able to return your device. Having access to the IMEI (Settings > General > About) makes it easy to initialise a carrier-block, but iOS 7 takes care of much of the problem of stolen phones through Activation Lock.

Preventing problems

At present, the best thing you can do is to lock your phone with a passcode or more adventurous password to any potential security breaches. Making sure you've got Find My iPhone running under Settings > iCloud will ensure your iPhone is traceable should it go missing. Upgrading to iOS 7 provides some peace of mind in the form of Activation Lock, rendering the phone useless even after it has been erased.

Even if you think your phone is secure, there's always a chance the thief will guess and gain access. For best security, don't choose easy "1234″ passcodes. How to fix 7 Windows 8.1 upgrade issues

Microsoft recently released Windows 8.1, an upgrade to Windows 8 which arrived with mixed reviews. Most people see Windows 8.1 as a type of Service Pack. The updates introduced by Windows 8.1, however, are much more pervasive and consequently seem to be causing more trouble than Service Packs in previous Windows versions.

Windows 8.1 can cause several issues during the process of upgrading and even more afterwards. If you're faced with one of them, read on to see if there's a potential fix. Alternatively, if you're considering an upgrade, make sure to prep your computer for Windows 8.1 beforehand.

Hardware support

An issue that is often experienced is reduced hardware support. For one reason or another, Windows 8.1 changes something deep in the system that can affect drivers, resulting in unrecognized or malfunctioning hardware. In this case, the backlight of the laptop was no longer controllable — it was ridiculously too dim, and the brightness buttons on my keyboard wouldn't change the setting.

Ultimately, to fix issuesthis, make sure thatof your drivers are up to date via various channels. The best places to look are at the manufacturer's website or Windows Update, as sometimes it can deliver driver updates. A personal issue here was resolved whenSamsung released a "brightness fix patch" via their SW Updater software package. Make sure to check your respective sources as well.

Bad drivers

On a related note, Windows may refuse to upgrade to 8.1 if it doesn'tcertain drivers. For example, a number of people have a specific driver which Windows asks you to remove in order to upgrade. Of course, you'll need to do so in order to continue. Alternatively, you may be able to just update your drivers to a possibly Windows 8.1-friendly version, so that you don't have to remove it completely.

SkyDrive files gone "Online Only"

If you're an avid SkyDrive user, you may come across an issueSkyDrive claims thatof the files that were once downloaded to your computer are now "online only". This is incorrect, and the files are actually still on your computer as they previously were.you need to do to resolve this "blemish" is to open Windows Explorer, right click on SkyDrive in the left-hand pane of common folders, and click on "Make available offline". This should make sure thatyour SkyDrive files will be synchronized, or just mark them as synchronized if they're already present.

UpgradingWindows 8.1 preview

If you were a user of the Windows 8.1 Preview, you will probably face issues upgrading to the real release. Microsoft already announced the problem ahead of time, stating that you'd most likely be able to upgrade to the final code, but you would have to reinstallof your desktop and Windows Store apps. If that's the case, you might as well go ahead and do a complete reinstall when upgrading to the final code, as clean installs are much less buggy than upgrades.

Error screens

If you received a "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1″ error with a code of 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 or something similar, you can attempt to get around the problem by unpluggingof your peripherals — except the necessary onesyour mouse and keyboard, obviously — and make sure that your graphics card driver is up-to-date before performing the upgrade. The bug still remains at large, but these tips can give you a better chance at beating it. The good thing about this error, at least, is that the installer rolls your system back to Windows 8, so you're not stuck with a bricked system.

If you receive an error stating "Sorry, it looksthis PC can't run Windows 8.1. This might be because the Users or Program Files folder is being redirected to another partition.", and this is actually the case, then you'll need to move your User or Program Files folder back to the primary system hard drive/partition. Since this error wouldn't show up without you having changed the location of those folders, just follow the same instructions to move them back.

Secure boot watermark

If, after successfully upgrading to Windows 8.1, you see a watermark in the corner of your desktop saying "Secure Boot isn't configured correctly", then you'll need to head into your computer's BIOS and mess with the Secure Boot settings to enable or configure it. Afterwards, Windows should stop complaining.

Conclusion

Windows 8.1 introduces many new and improved features, including the option to boot to the desktop, deep SkyDrive integration, and an updated UI, which now supports dynamic Snap for multiple apps or sharing the desktop wallpaper with the Start screen. Most of the changes, however, are behind-the-scenes, which may be why so many people are having issues. Generally, it is recommended that you stick with Windows 8, unless you read about a Windows 8.1 feature that you absolutely need. In that case you should prepare to upgrade to Windows 8.1 with the option to roll back.

Sony‘s SmartWatch 2: Everything you need to know

Sony's new SmartWatch 2 doesn't get as much attention - and doesn't do as much - as Samsung's Galaxy Gear computerized wristwatch. But for the things it does, Sony's version performs better.

The SmartWatch 2 is also 33% cheaper, at about $200, and works with a variety of Androidphones, not just Sony's. Samsung's Galaxy Gear sells for $300 and is compatible only with a handful of high-end Samsung phones.

That said, neither company has made a compelling case of why people need a smartwatch this holiday season.

These wrist-bound gadgets are supposed to free youconstantly pulling out your phone to check for messages. But I found myself checking the watch more often than I would pull out a phone. That proved more distracting - and less private - over dinner, for instance.

The SmartWatch 2 is worth considering primarily if you want to be among the first with the latest technology.

Where the SmartWatch 2 outperforms the Gear is in delivering messages.

The Gear gives you full texts, but that's about it. Get a Facebook or Gmail notification? You have to return to the phone to read the message. The watch is supposed to reduce the need to pull out your phone, but not if you keep getting notifications urging you to check.

And while I got about 2.5 days on the SmartWatch 2 on a singlege, the Gear dies in a day. You cange Sony's watch with a standard micro-USBger, while the Gear needs its own. The Gear's watch face also goes dark so it could last just a day. With Sony's watch, you can see the time even in a low-power mode.

Sony's SmartWatch 2 also has many more apps to choose- more than three times as many.

Do you need it?
Maybe one day, smartwatches will truly be smart. They need to be better at filtering the important notificationsthe noise, and they need to do more than tell you to go back to the phone to complete a task.

For now, we're in an era of experimentation. Sony's SmartWatch 2 advances the field with a just-the-basics smartwatch, but I'll wait at least a year or two for even more advances before buying one myself.

Lenovo launches Yoga tablet starting at Rs 22,999

Aiming at a higher market share, leading personal computer maker Lenovo announced the launch of its new Yoga tablet priced between Rs 22,999 to Rs 28,999.

Yoga tablet has been ergonomically designed to aid a longer and comfortable tablet viewing experience. It is priced at Rs 22,999 and Rs 28,999, for the 20.3 cm and 25.4 cm models, respectively, the company officials said.

".....according to IDC report- in the tablet space we assumed 3% market share in the last quarter and we have moved to 14.3%, a very strong number two position just in a span of 2-3 months," Lenovo India director (Consumer Business) Shailendra Katyal told reporters on the sidelines of launch event here.

He said "This is happening because we are investing into business-in terms of promotion and building our retail presence also in terms of product portfolio; ....This quarter absolutely with this new launch- the differentiated products that we are bringing in, our product portfolio will go up to six products."

"Increasing market share with launch of new products is our ambition, lot depends on how the market takes the new products....let's see how market responds to it....," he said.

He said consumer space is turning out to be larger market when compared to enterprise space. "...clearly we have had very strong results on the consumer side of the business."

"Two years back we were about 8-10% market share in the consumer PC market share, we moved to 13% market share during the whole of last year. This year in Q2, I'm happy to share that we were given number two position and our market share has gone up to 17% according to IDC report."

"So clearly we are building a very strong momentum with core business which is PC business in the consumer space."

He said the company was conscious that consumerisation will lead to the growth in the country and hence started investing in the exclusive stores. "It is a differentiated strategy, something that was not done in the PC space."

"In the last year we had 1,000 odd stores, we have currently around 1,450. By the end of this year we will have 1,800 exclusive stores."

"We have two formats of stores; one is larger format which is for tier 1-2 cities and to others it is small format. Large format will be 500 odd sq ft and the smaller format will be 250 odd sq ft," he added.

Smartphone apps to make your home secure

Home owners worried about security while they are at work or on vacation have a range of new smartphone apps to help them remotely monitor their property and to notify them if there is a problem.

In the United States in 2012 there were more than 2 million burglaries, or about one every 15 seconds, according to government crime figures.

Large established companies and startups are offering apps that connect remotely to monitoring systems to help consumers keep their homes and property secure.

Viper Connect, for iPhone and Android, is an app that monitors homes and cars. The company supplies a do-it-yourself security system with motion sensors and video cameras, which can be placed around the home, and watched remotely.

"Traditionally unless a home had already been wired for security and automation, it was difficult and expensive for people to get the advantage of home security," said James Turner, vice president of product development at Viper, which is owned by Directed Electronics, in Vista, California,

Thanks to wireless devices and mobile apps that can control them, it is much easier, he said.

With the Viper Connect app homeowners can turn the security on or off remotely. If there is any motion in the home it sends a notification to the users. For an extra fee, real-time video feedscameras placed around the home can also be viewed.

The app can monitor up to 64 devices, including sirens, sensors and as many as eight cameras.

"Normally, when you're a considering home security system, you tend to thinkare the areas in my home susceptible to break-in," Turner said.

The starter kit, which includes two sensors, costs $229.99. Additional accessories are also available to control lighting, thermostats and garage doors. The app is free but premium services, such as access to video feeds, costs $9.99 each month.

For $199, iSmart Alarm, connects to a similar system and lets users monitor their system without signing on for a monthly plan. The Oplink app, which costs $149, requires a monthly package that starts at $9.99.

AT&T also has a security app, AT&T Digital Life, for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone. Its basic package starts at $29.99 a month plus a $149.99 fee for equipment and installation. Users can monitor their homes and remotely unlock doors to let someone in.

Most security systems will notify the homeowners, while othersAT&T Digital Life will call the police if there is a break-in.

Smartphone owners looking for a cheaper solution can turn to apps such as Presence, a free app that lets users turn an old iOS device into a security camera that can be viewed remotely.

"It's an emerging market and I think it will catch on rapidly in the next two to five years," Turner said about security apps.

Google Glass to let you play your favourite song

To sell Glass, its augmented-reality form of eyewear, Google has already tried to make it a fashion accessory and a must-have video device for any parent or skydiver. Now it is also presenting this $1,500 piece of wearable technology as a way to interact with music.

On Tuesday, Google will unveil a set of features for Glass to search for songs, scan through saved playlists and listen to music in high fidelity. This canbe done while a user is wearing the lensless frames, which respond to vocal commands and have a small computer and transparent projection screen above the right eye.

When Glass boots up, it will display "listen to" among its standard voice commands -"take a picture" and search for a term on Google - and let a wearer name a song or artist and then stream that music through Play, Google's media and apps hub. Users can link their Play accounts to have access to playlists and song recommendations based on what they have listened to in the past.

Google is also introducing a set of earbud headphones designed for Glass, which will be available by the end of the month for $85. Sound Search, a feature introduced to Glass two months ago, actsShazam or SoundHound by identifying a song playing in the vicinity.

"With these new features, we're now building a great music experience on Glass, whether you're a classical music professor, an acclaimed sound engineer and hip-hop producer, or someone who wants to listen to their favorite tunes anytime, anywhere," Ed Sanders, the director of marketing for Google Glass, said in a statement.

The features expand the practical uses of Glass, a product that was announced last year and released to early users this spring. The device has already been the subject of wide debate - not only about whether it will catch on with consumers, but also whether Glass represents an invasion of privacy.

Asidehelping Glass to market itself, the features could help publicize Google's streaming music offerings, including Google Play MusicAccess, its Spotify-like subscription service, which have been slow to gain traction with consumers.

A high-end technology product with a connection to music is already seen as a marketing angle with potential. The music industry is eagerly awaiting Beats Music, a subscription servicethe makers of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones.

For now, only Google's music services are available on Glass, but others are expected to be introduced.

Part of Google's pitch for Glass is that its voice commands and easily visible display will free usersstaring down at their smartphonesthe time.

Young Guru, a record producer and DJ who has worked with starsJay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna and Ludacris, agreed wholeheartedly with that assessment.

A promotional video for Glass shows Young Guru using the eyewear to order food in Spanish, and to identify a Latin-flavored song playing overhead, tracking down a vinyl record of the song and then spinning the record in the studio.

"It's an immense timesaver, and a great tool to make the world that much cooler, and realize some of the dreams we had as kids," Young Guru said in an interview on Monday.

"Forof us who grew up watching 'Star Trek,'" he added, "this is sort of the beginning of the holodeck."
