DoorCE meeting in Bratislava!

✨ Bratislava hosted the DoorCE meeting on 2–3 December, surrounded by the festive glow of Christmas lights. The first day focused on an overview of the current project status, partner activity summaries, and the WP2 workshop dedicated to toolbox progress and evaluation. On the second day, with the presence of our Project Officer, Mrs Angelika van Es, discussions centered on the joint activity report, followed by the WP1 workshop on strategy updates and training materials, and the WP3 workshop addressing pilot updates and coordination for the next semester.

🚀 This meeting marked another important step forward by the DoorCE team in reaching our project objectives.

Municipality of Velenje: Advancing Strategic Digital Development

The Municipality of Velenje (MOV) serves as a key public authority and development facilitator, actively shaping the strategic direction of the local community. Its Digital Development Strategy defines priority areas for transformation, aligned with European and national regulations on data protection, accessibility, and transparency.

MOV is committed to implementing the GDPR, the European Accessibility Act, and other frameworks that support a secure and inclusive digital transition. As part of the DoorCE project, MOV aims to develop the Velenje Open Data Platform, positioning it as one of the local Open Data Hubs.

Especially many small municipalities shared a common challenge:
they want to engage with data but often don’t know where to start or lack the capacity to do so. These conversations reinforced the importance of meeting them where they are — supporting them at a low threshold and helping them take the first practical steps toward data-driven work.
At the aconium booth, visitors explored how DoorCE’s Open Data Toolbox and Strategy can help cities and municipalities unlock, manage and use data effectively – even without advanced technical expertise.
Building sustainable local data ecosystems is not just about technology, it’s about enabling people to work together through clear processes and accessible tools.

At the Smart Country Convention in Berlin, aconium GmbH shared insights from the DoorCE project and the value of public open data for municipalities. Claire Piqueret Rose demonstrated the role of the DoorCE toolbox in enabling data-driven innovation in the public sector.

A key message: Building a local data ecosystem starts with collaboration.
Engaging departments, stakeholders, and communities ensures open data is relevant and accessible to all.
Using practical guides and simple tools can also help convey the topic to all levels of staff, making work on open data part of the daily routine.
Some of the multiple benefits such as focusing on “fruits at your fingertips” and prioritizing data quality over quantity were highlighted.

The toolbox supports local public authorities at each of these stages, helping them to open, manage and use data effectively, even without advanced technical expertise.

The DoorCE consortium has reached an important milestone: the first version of the Public Data Opening & Security Strategy (WP1) is done.

Developed by aconium and Trexima, this first draft lays the foundation for supporting public administrations on their data opening journey.

A big thank you goes to all consortium and associated partners for their contribution through interviews and surveys. Their valuable input – from leading regions such as Warsaw and Linz to partners just starting their open data journey like Zadar, Velenje and Spopt – ensures the strategy is applicable and impactful for both beginners and more advanced municipalities.
But the journey continues: Step by step, we’re building a strong framework for open and secure public data across Central Europe.

On 11 June 2025, aconium had the pleasure of presenting DoorCE at Data Week Leipzig 2025 in Germany during the workshop “How can local data ecosystems promote sustainable public services?”

💡 Dilara from aconium showcased the outcomes of our initial Public Data Opening Strategy (WP1) and introduced the powerful features of the Open Data Toolbox (WP2)—demonstrating their value for municipalities and citizens alike.
The presentation sparked enthusiastic interest and led to a vibrant discussion on the potential of open data to drive sustainable innovation in the public sector.

🚀 Project Meeting ! Zadar 21-23 May 2025

🎥 Alfred Hitchcock once described Zadar as having "the most beautiful sunset in the world."
🌇 This inspiring backdrop set the scene for our recent project meeting, where we made great strides in refining strategies, optimizing tools, and preparing for the next phase.

Each partner provided an overview of the activities carried out, with discussions covering WP1 (Strategy), WP2 (Toolbox), and WP3 (Pilot cases).
Additionally, we introduced the first working release of the Public Open Data (POD) Toolbox-an important milestone.

A fantastic collaborative effort driving us closer to our project goals!

The City of Zadar serves as a local government entity, encompassing the city itself along with four neighboring settlements and seven islands. Over the years, it has fostered collaborations with numerous local government units and non-governmental organizations, both nationally and internationally, actively implementing projects that align with the objectives of the DoorCE initiative.

By establishing an IoT network, Zadar has laid the groundwork for the widespread adoption of open LoRaWAN technology, enabling innovative digital solutions.

Founded in 2003 by the City of Zadar, Innovative Zadar plays a key role as a business support institution, assisting small and medium-sized enterprises in the city and its surrounding areas. These enterprises serve as essential drivers of coordinated and integrated development, shaping digital services and infrastructure tailored to local government needs.

Within the DoorCE project, the City of Zadar aims to develop the Zadar Open Data Platform, functioning as one of the local Open Data Hubs. This platform will provide open access to valuable datasets, including air quality metrics, public vehicle availability, city budget information, and other key insights from municipal service companies and institutions.
