Microsoft said Thursday its Bing search engine would be reconfigured to give more prominence to "mobile-friendly" websites, an acknowledgment of the growing importance of smartphones and other mobile devices.
The announcement comes just weeks after Google implemented a similar shift. The moves by the two search engines could have big implications for website operators, advertisers and for those who seek to optimize search rankings.

How to Shop for a Web Developer

In the changing world, virtually all businesses could benefit from, and arguably need a web presence. Years ago at the dawn of internet popularity, web development was a lot more accessible, and it was easier to put a web page together. This was primarily due to the expectations of how it should look. Complexity was low, and the availability of tools to seriously tailor web sites and applications was not great. Today, some websites can cost you more than a Ferrari, and are just as shiny and high powered. Under the hood, there is bound to be a lot of complex code you will not understand. We all know that Ferraris are the among the highest quality vehicle in the world, but there is no equivalent web development brand you can automatically trust to give you the best quality product; leaving you to feel there is no real way of totally knowing what you're getting. Here are a few ways to ensure you get the best quality web product for your dollar.

1. Whether you are looking to have a website designed, or an app built, rely on samples. The very first thing you should ask to see is a portfolio. It pays to shop around and compare web products. Seeing what a company has built, offers a good benchmark for expectations. Not all design and development houses are equal!

2. Do a little perusing. Ask questions in public forums, and perhaps obtain a consultation from one or two independent sources about current web conventions. If you find out that most major design firms are embracing mobile first design, or that the best policy for developing apps that don't break is to employ MVC methods and organize code within a framework- make sure you're working with a firm that adheres to these conventions. Technology rapidly shifts. Your best chance of getting mileage out of your web product, is to make sure you're embracing emerging tech.

3. Number 3 is more of an "if", than a solid rule. "IF" you are not completely bound by price, don't bargain hunt. Anyone with talent in tech, knows they are talented. They charge accordingly. Since it is very difficult to find someone who truly knows their craft, when you find a developer or firm that really has it together, do not turn them away because there is someone cheaper. Code is an investment. Code breaks. Code gets old. If you write it correctly, most of the time, these facts can be mitigated. Your site or app can look like a Ferrari, but run like a Pinto. And you, as a non-savvy consumer, might not know the difference until it breaks down.

Usability is King!

We all know the old adage in the web world: content is king. And yes, content, without addressing the context in which it is displayed,
is definitely king. But, I argue that, in this era, experience can trump content! Accessibility - with a plethora of web devices from
phones, to tablets, to 30" LCDs - is what determines whether or not and how your content gets to it's intended audience. As a result, web and
UI developers have a unique task here, on the internet. We are more than just code junkies, sitting behind an IDE, slapping together a bunch of
code, and designing graphics that will eventually make up your website. We are engineering experiences. We are in charge of developing a
marketable experience for your users. We have to define what constitutes usability. We have to know your audience; as a web experience engineered
for older generations will differ greatly from one created for k-12 age groups. And while content, SEO, and social media are great, the world now
boasts several billion people with web access. Competition for attention in any market is arguably steeper than it's ever been. Even if your audience
reaches your website before it reaches your competition, you need a highly usable interface to display your information. So, today we ask: are you
offering your users true accessibility? Can they view your site on their phones, tablets, and home computers? Is your site cleanly designed and
simple to navigate? If not, consider redesigning your online presence, with usability in mind!
