“Talent—this gift God bestowed upon a lucky few: people around me, my colleagues, some friends, have hinted at the fact that this drawing ability I have is pure talent. It is a common belief that those of us who draw have a gift.
I strongly believe that putting drawing down to a gift is a stance that postulates: I can’t do this while you do it so well, so why should I try? I don’t have the “gift,” Dismissing drawing well as a gift is a cop-out. While I don’t deny that history has had several geniuses in the realm of music and art, I think most of us who can draw a portrait or a tree do so because behind each drawing, there have been hours of prior drawings. I sucked before I could draw anything half decently, and unfortunately for me, sucking at drawing is not over. I still fail. I still draw painstakingly.”
