May 28 is Fireworks Day in Japan.
Did you know? Tokyo’s famous Sumida River fireworks trace back to 1733.
They began near Ryogoku Bridge as a memorial for victims of famine and disease, before growing into a beloved summer tradition.
During the Edo period, two rival firework makers,Tamaya and Kagiya, competed by launching fireworks from opposite sides of the river. Spectators would cheer their favorites by shouting their names, a tradition that continues to this day.
After periods of interruption, the festival was revived in modern times and is now held every July — continuing the tradition along the Sumida River, right by our headquarters in Ryogoku. 🎆✨
