“If you have a reliable market, avocado farming is the best. The biggest challenge Nyeri avocado farmers have been facing is poor market. We sell through brokers who would buy our avocados at a price of 3 ksh per piece. Things are changing. Many export companies are training new farmers on best varieties, offering agronomist assistance and giving them a good and reliable market. Above all, the most important is for us farmers to form groups, then companies will be very interested to contract from us.” - Charity

“We have a registered self-help group with the women of my village. At the end of every season you can see how much these women save in their account. They have the confidence to take loans from chama, buy seeds and hire extra labour without worry, as they will be able to pay back after they sell their produces. Farming has really improved the lives of women in this region as we no longer need to depend on our husbands' money. We make our own money and use the money.” - Reginah

“Farming is my full-time job. I do a lot of research about farming in books and websites and most of the research is about best pesticides, fertilizers and markets. I also like sharing this information with other farmers.” - Stanley

“I'm an onion farmer and a broker in Nyeri county. One of my biggest concerns is seeing the farmers get enough for their hard work, I believe that farmers are our employees and without them the country economy is at risk.” -Gerald

“I once didn't have money to buy seeds, since the previous season was not good. I tried to look for a loan, but it was hard for me even to decide where to look for loan and that when we came together with other farmers who were going through the same and decided to start a self help group. Now, if our members need a loan, they can apply and get the loan in less than one day. We now have more than 50 farmers. When we come together as farmers we can go far.” - Nelson

“I wonder what I could be if not a farmer. Farming is the simplest thing you can ever do that also comes with a good pay. I have been a farmer for the last twenty years. I have seen my children through school and have done a lot of projects to better my life. I would encourage young people who hang out in cities complaining about the lack of employment to be a self boss on the farm.” - Shelmith.

“I'm the third generation farming on this land, and though some of our siblings left the village to different towns for white collar jobs, I always support them financially and send them fresh food from my farm. So, farming not only benefits me, but also our entire family. We will continue to farmer for more generations as it always pays back.” - Irene.

“With the change of climate, farming has turned out to be very hard. It is hard to tell even the right time to plant and the right kind of seed to plant, we are now changing to drought resistance crops and other types of crops like avocados which are not easily affected by small change of weather. For example when there is no rain you can water and if the rain is big it won't destroy them quickly.” - Robert.

“Before, I was a business lady in Thika. I struggled so much since my business was the only income for the whole family. Sometimes it was bad, I even ended up being broke and I will look for a loan to keep us moving. One time I decided to start farming, I inherited four hectares of land from my father and I decided to go back to Nyeri and try my luck. I started growing maize, potatoes and onions for both domestic and cash. Farming has never disappointed me, I educated my kids and they got good jobs and I’m now retiring in peace. Though I started out of desperation, I now do it out of passion.” - Jane.
