World Press Freedom Day on 3rd May
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated every year on May 3rd. It was created by the United Nations to raise awareness of the importance of free press. This day reminds us that in many countries around the world, journalists face censorship, fines, or even danger just for doing their jobs.
Today, there’s a thin line between the meaning of ‘press’ as we knew it, and the rise and rise of citizen journalism and the explosion of digital media influence like Cyprian Nyakundi in our country.
Recently, press freedom has faced several challenges. New laws in some countries make it harder for journalists to report without fear of punishment. There is also an overall rise in attacks on journalists, and more people distrust mainstream media. This has made the job of reporting news much tougher and riskier. We saw this when protesters violently targeted journalists during ‘maandamano’, after DCI threatened to use news pictures to identify those protesters.
Digital media and the growth of content creation have both positively and negatively affected press freedom. On one hand, the internet has made it easier for journalists (including citizen journalists) to share their stories and reach a global audience. However, it has also led to the spread of misinformation and made it harder for people to know what to believe. Plus, many content creators aren't professional journalists as such, so their work might not always be reliable or verified.
Have a fantastic World Press Freedom Day!
