Solution for Identifying OSS Security and Compliance Issues in Binary Code Insignary Inc.

Security is of utmost concern for embedded software used in mobile, IoT and automotive industries. Although significant security vulnerabilities have been discovered in popular open source software, majority of companies still heavily rely on open source code to build their software products. While it is possible to build a secure product by avoiding the use of known vulnerable code, the difficult

y in doing so arises from the fact that most third-party software is distributed in binary format without the source code, making it extremely difficult to identify the potential vulnerabilities. has evolved the Binary Analysis Tool (BAT), a framework which has been deployed since 2009 to detect open source license compliance issues, into a commercial solution called Insignary Clarity. Insignary Clarity, in addition to identifying license compliance issues, enables proactive scanning of embedded firmware for known, preventable security problems to facilitate “security by default.” It provides increased confidence to security and compliance teams in the deployment of products containing open source software. Insignary Clarity was first announced at LinuxCon Europe in Berlin in October 2016. We are currently offering early access to the solution for select customers and partners through our Beta Program. It will be publicly available starting February 2017. Insignary was incorporated in 2016 in South Korea. We own the IP behind the Binary Analysis Tool (BAT) and have exclusive rights to distribute BAT commercially. We are backed by venture capital and have significant business and technical talent in our executive team with extensive experience in the software industry, venture capital and business development. Furthermore, our founder team is specialized in open source, compliance and security.

“Today, software is written and built using many different languages. For instance, a web application may have a JavaScript frontend with a Java backend, which may access native libraries written in C / C++,” said Tae-Jin (TJ) Kang, CEO of Insignary, Inc. “Therefore, to get comprehensive scan results, it is necessary to analyze not only compiled binary files but also script files contained in software packages.”

We've added multi-factor detection to Clarity -- in addition to its unique patented ‘deep fingerprint’ (unique identifier) matching, we now perform hash comparisons to further improve Clarity’s overall detection capability.

25/10/2019

We've also added detection scope control. This feature allows for the control of Clarity's detection scope. In its previous version, Clarity detected and reported all open source components, including embedded open source components like snippets and statically linked codes, etc. However, as not all users or use cases require this deep level of detection and reporting, the detection scope can be now adjusted to exclude deep or transitive dependency detection results.

One of our major feature updates to Clarity is script language support. This is supported through the same fingerprint technology we use for our binary analysis. Clarity can now scan JavaScript files with support for many more script languages, such as Python (coming soon)!
