Art Direction & Exhibition Design for Shaping Common Spaces, The Artists in Residency Program, exhibited within BeMA’s booth at the Beirut Art Fair 2019

Launched in 2017 by BeMA and held in partnership with the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education, this program collaborates with artists to roll out residencies during the academic year targeting Lebanese public schools, and aiming at providing children from different social and geographical backgrounds with the unique opportunity to acquire new skills by working with artists directly.

The residencies consist of a series of immersive classroom sessions directed by an artist for a period of six to eight weeks, one to two times a week, with the activities scheduled during the art period of the national curriculum. The 10-year program is ongoing and will cover 34 public schools across Lebanon.

“The content of this film is based on testimonies from girls living in Lebanon, narrating their experiences with child marriage. The storyline is a collection of verbatim from interviews with Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian child brides under the age of 18. Despite their unique experiences, the film also sheds a light on the collective experiences they shared with violence.”

The world has catastrophically failed millions of people fleeing war, persecution and despair. Calculating politics won out over moral and legal obligations to offer protection and assistance to those in need. Like a contagious disease, walls, fences and restrictive border measures rampantly spread causing countless thousands of people to die on land or at sea.

This 6-minute animated film "Sorry I Drowned", created by our studio and Médecins Sans Frontières/ أطباء بلا حدود في لبنان, is inspired by a letter allegedly found on the body of someone who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea due to the prevailing cynical politics of our day. While we may not know the truth behind who wrote the letter, we do know that what it depicts is real. This reality cannot continue.

In 2016, more than 20,000 people were rescued by MSF.
