A responsive website

Today, having a website for serving only PCs is not good enough. With the increased use of smartphones, tabs and other devices where a user can access Internet from, it is mandatory that your website serves all these devices. Without making a website responsive, it won’t display good on other devices as good as it displays on a PC. Some areas of the website can be cut off, images will be large and users will have hard time scrolling horizontally and vertically. One option which was practiced in the past was to design different sites or themes for different devices. Although this solved the issue, it introduced other complexities such as having to maintain number of sites rather than one and having to design new content targeted for each and every site.

But now the better way of making your website available in multiple devices is to make it responsive. This way you only have one website, but it will adapt a layout which is best viewable depending on the device the website is viewed.

Hosting and domain registrations

A domain name is the address you type in the address bar to look up a website. Just like registering yourself with a mobile provider and getting a SIM with a particular number which can be given to other people to contact you, you must need a name and register it with a domain registrar to enable others to lookup your site using the given name. It can be that your name is already used by someone else so in this case you will have to either change your name, go for a different domain extension (may be .net instead of .com) or see if the already taken domain name is for sale. Most of the cases domains will not be for sale if it is already serving an active site, leaving you with the other two options.

So now you have your domain name, what about your website, where should you place your website files for others to access? This is where you need to get a hosting plan, which will give you some space in the Internet to place your files.

You will need to pay the rent for domain and hosting monthly or yearly depending on how you chose. Different domain and hosting providers have different plans and charges. Choose what is suitable for you and then you will have to direct your domain to the hosting plan to start sending traffic to your website.
