Word of advice on Sri Lankan banking system. Banks which provide credit cards are supposed to encourage customers to spend from their credit cards. HSBC provides with discounted prices for selected outlets and others do the same. But what they do is for every transaction they charge 3% extra for paying with credit cards, from merchants, where merchants will inevitably put it forward to the customers.
Giving out discounts at selected retailers won't do anything to encourage customer spending if you charge extra at the checkout for paying in with credit cards.
the story gets worse when it comes yo merchants. If the average monthly credit card usage falls below their expected minimum the merchants are to pay certain amount to the respective banking instituition. As a result merchants refuse to have credit card payment machines installed at their premises, and also they encourage people to not use credit cards instead opt for cash payments.
In summery what I want to express is as financial institutions, banks must encourage customers to spend not only with retailer discounts, but also by not charging extra for each and every transaction. Encourage consumers to use more and more of their Bank cards, you get more than enough profit from the steep interest rates that as banks you have put upon on customers. As banks you also need to take the side of the merchants, if not for them the whole credit card schemes will be failed, cause your average credit card holder doesn't only live in Colombo and Suburbs, but also in rural areas, where your selected retailers with discounts are not present.
