Aircraft Marshalling Signals: The Silent Language of the Apron ✈️

In the middle of deafening engine noise, where radio communication is impossible, aircraft and ground crew communicate using only one tool: hand signals.

This is called "Marshalling Signals". Standardized by ICAO Doc 9432, these signals are identical at every airport in the world. Today, let’s decode this silent conversation between the Pilot and the Marshaller.

Top 10 Signals from Marshaller to Pilot

Wingwalker / Guide - One arm raised overhead, index finger making circular motion.
Meaning: "A wingwalker is guiding you. Follow his instructions."

Identify Gate / Stand - Both arms raised vertically overhead.
Meaning: "Identify your gate. This is your parking stand."

Straight Ahead - Both arms extended sideways, palms facing forward.
Meaning: "Proceed straight ahead."

Turn Left / Right - One arm extended sideways, the other arm pointing in the direction of turn.
Meaning: "Turn left / right."

Normal Stop - Arms extended sideways, then move both hands above head in circular motion.
Meaning: "Stop. This is your exact stopping point."

Meaning: "Reduce speed. Taxi speed is too high."

5 Pilot Response Signals to Marshaller

Pilots also reply using hand signals visible through the cockpit window:

Brakes Engaged - Arm raised, hand clenched into a fist.
Meaning: "Parking brake is set."

Insert Chocks - Both fists brought together and moved downward.
Meaning: "Insert chocks."

Ready To Start Engine - Number of fingers shown, then arm raised.
Meaning: "Ready to start engine."

Brakes Released - Arm raised, hand opened.

ගුවන් පථ සලකුණු: ගුවන් නියමුවෙකුගේ දෘශ්‍ය මාර්ගෝපදේශය ✈️

ගුවන් පථයක් යනු තාර අල්ලපු දිග තීරුවක් පමණක් නොවේ. එය අහසේ සිට පැමිණෙන ගුවන් යානයක් ආරක්ෂාකාරීව බිමට ගොඩබැස්වීම සඳහා නිර්මාණය කර ඇති "දෘශ්‍ය භාෂාවකි". රාත්‍රියේ, මීදුමේ, හෝ අයහපත් කාලගුණික තත්ත්වයක් යටතේ - Cockpit එක තුළ සිට නියමුවාට පෙන එකම විශ්වාසදායක මාර්ගය වන්නේ මෙම සුදු සහ කහ පැහැති සලකුණු ය.

මෙම සලකුණු සියල්ලම ජාත්‍යන්තර සිවිල් ගුවන් සේවා සංවිධානයේ ICAO Annex 14 ප්‍රමිතීන්ට අනුකූලව සකස් කර ඇත.

පිපිරුම් අවම කිරීමේ ප්‍රදේශය - Blast Pad
Threshold එකට පෙර කහ පැහැති chevron ලකුණු සහිත ත්‍රිකෝණාකාර ප්‍රදේශය මෙයයි. ගුවන් යානයක් ගුවන් ගතවීමේදී එන්ජිමෙන් පිටවන අධික උෂ්ණත්වය සහ පීඩනය සහිත වාතය මගින් ගුවන් පථයට වන හානිය අවම කිරීම සහ හදිසියේ ගුවන් ගතවීම නැවැත්වීමට අවශ්‍ය වූ විට යානය නැවැත්වීමට අමතර ඉඩක් සැපයීම මෙහි අරමුණයි. නියමුවෙකු කිසිවිටෙකත් මෙම ප්‍රදේශය මත ගොඩබැසිය යුතු නැත.

ගුවන් පථ හඳුන්වන අංකය - Runway Designator
"13R" ලෙස ලොකුවට සලකුණු කර ඇති අංකය සහ අකුර මෙයයි.
13 = ගුවන් පථයේ දිශාව. Magnetic Compass එකේ 130° දිශාවට යොමු වී ඇති නිසා 13 ලෙස සලකුණු කර ඇත. විරුද්ධ දිශාවෙන් බලන විට එය "31" බවට පත් වේ.
R = Right. එකම දිශාවට ඇති සමාන්තර ගුවන් පථ දෙකක් හෝ තුනක් ඇති ගුවන් තොටුපළවල වම්, මැද, දකුණු ගුවන් පථ වෙන්කර හඳුනා ගැනීමට L, C, R අකුරු යොදා ගනී.

මධ්‍ය රේඛාව - Centerline
ගුවන් පථයේ මැදින් කැඩූ සුදු ඉරකින් සලකුණු කර ඇත. ගුවන් ගතවීමේදී සහ ගොඩබෑමේදී යානය ගුවන් පථයේ මැදින් තබා ගැනීමට නියමුවාට ඇති ප්‍රධාන දෘශ්‍ය මාර්ගෝපදේශය මෙයයි. හරස් සුළං සහිත ගොඩබෑමකදී මෙහි වටිනාකම තවත් වැඩි වේ.

ඉලක්ක කිරීමේ ලක්ෂ්‍යය - Aiming Point
Threshold එකෙන් මීටර් 300ක් පමණ දුරින් ඇති විශාල සුදු සෘජුකෝණාස්‍ර දෙක මෙයයි. ගොඩබෑමට එන විට නියමුවා තම දෑස් යොමු කර ගත යුතු නිශ්චිත ස්ථානය මෙයයි. "Aim for the aiming point" යනු ගුවන් නියමු පුහුණුවේ රන්වන් රීතියකි.

ස්පර්ශක කලාප සලකුණු - Touchdown Zone Markings
Aiming Point එකට පසුව ඇති යුගල වශයෙන් යුක්ත සුදු ඉරි මෙයයි. ගුවන් යානයේ ප්‍රධාන රෝද බිම ස්පර්ශ විය යුතු වඩාත් සුදුසුම කලාපය මෙයයි. "දිගට ගොඩබැස, ආරක්ෂාකාරීව ගොඩබැස" යන මූලධර්මය අනුව මෙම කලාපය තුළ ගොඩබැසීම අත්‍යවශ්‍ය වේ.

දාර සලකුණු - Edge Markings
ගුවන් පථයේ දෙපස දිගේ දිගටම අඳින ලද සුදු ඉරි මගින් ගුවන් පථයේ භෞතික සීමාවන් නියම කෙරේ. රාත්‍රී කාලයේදී සහ දෘශ්‍යතාවය අඩු අවස්ථාවලදී ගුවන් පථයේ පළල මැන ගැනීමට මෙය නියමුවාට උපකාරී වේ.

ඇයි මේක වැදගත්?
දෘශ්‍ය ගුවන් රීති VFR යටතේ පියාසර කරන විට මෙන්ම උපකරණ ආශ්‍රිතව ගොඩබෑමේ අවසාන අදියරේදීත්, නියමුවෙකුගේ තීරණ වලින් 90%කට වඩා රඳා පවතින්නේ මෙම සලකුණු මතය. Aiming Point එක මග හැරුණොත්, Touchdown Zone එකෙන් පිටත ගොඩබැසුවොත්, හෝ Blast Pad එක මත ගොඩබැසුවොත් - ප්‍රතිවිපාක ඉතා බරපතල විය හැක.
