Today, June 20, is World Refugee Day.
As of today, more than 123 million people around the world have been forcibly displaced due to war, conflict, and violence. Among them, approximately 43 million have been compelled to leave their countries of birth and seek safety in foreign lands. A large proportion of these refugees come from conflict-affected countries such as Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.
One of the most heartbreaking aspects of this crisis is that nearly 45 million of the world's displaced people are children. The pursuit of power and political ambitions by a few has robbed them of their childhood, education, and future opportunities.
Another troubling reality is that 73% of the world's refugees are hosted by low- and middle-income countries. Despite facing their own economic and social challenges, these nations continue to provide protection and shelter to those fleeing conflict and persecution.
The civil conflict that lasted for more than three decades in Sri Lanka forced many Sri Lankans to seek refuge in India. Even today, a number of them continue to live there as refugees.
Although the Sri Lanka office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) closed in 2024, refugees from other countries who have been registered in Sri Lanka continue to reside in the country.
Refugees are human beings just like us. They deserve safety, dignity, and the opportunity to build a better future. Providing them with protection, support, and compassion is not only a humanitarian responsibility but also a reflection of our shared humanity.
