Apple Offers Free Battery Replacement for 2016-17 MacBook Pros

By offering to replace their batteries for free.
On the support page for the fault, Apple explains, "A very small number of customers with 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro computers have experienced an issue with the battery not charging past 1%. The battery health status on these devices will also indicate "Service Recommended." If the status indicates that your battery is Normal, your battery is not affected by this issue."
The affected models are:

• MacBook Pro (13¬-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
• MacBook Pro (13-¬inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
• MacBook Pro (13-¬inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
• MacBook Pro (13-¬inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
• MacBook Pro (15-¬inch, 2016)
• MacBook Pro (15-¬inch, 2017)

If this issue hasn't happened to your 2016-17 MacBook Pro, Apple released a macOS update to prevent it from occurring. However, if it's already plaguing your device, contact Apple and the battery will be replaced free of charge. As usual, Apple makes it clear "your computer will be examined prior to service to verify that it is eligible for the free battery replacement."

There's No Touch Screen?
Updating macOS requires choosing System Preferences from the Apple Menu then clicking Software Update. The supplemental update will either appear for macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 or later or macOS Catalina 10.15.7. In the same System Preferences menu on macOS Big Sur, you can also click Battery > Battery Health to check the state of the battery at any time. MacOS Catalina users can do the same by holding the Option key and clicking the battery icon.

Chances are that if a password is easy for you to remember, a hacker can easily crack it. And despite years (and years) of tech companies warning consumers to use hard-to-crack passwords, plus two-factor authentication, people are still using laughably insecure codes.

Of NordPass' 200 most used passwords for 2020, the top three are 123456, 123456789, and picture1. Next on the list is just "password," but various number combinations, as well as qwerty, abc123, and Million2 also make the list. You should also avoid iloveyou, omgpop, ashley, chatbooks, princess, sunshine, dragon, and game names as passwords.

Evil USB Cable Can Remotely Accept Commands From Hacker



Plugging a USB cable into your PC may seem like a harmless affair. But not if the cable has been made by a hacker.

On Sunday, the security researcher Mike Grover demonstrated the threat by creating a malicious USB cable that can receive commands from a nearby smartphone and then execute them over the PC it's been plugged into.

His USB-to-Lightning cable looks pretty generic, but Grover actually fitted a Wi-Fi chip inside one of the sockets. Unsuspecting users will think they've plugged a simple cord into their PC. But in reality, the computer will actually detect the cable as a Human Interface Device akin to a mouse or keyboard.

Grover uploaded a video, showing the attack in action. In it, he plugs the cable into a MacBook. Then he uses his smartphone to remotely trigger the laptop to visit a malicious Google login webpage that can secretly collect the owner's password.

We were right! The iPhone 12 launch will take place on Oct. 13. Below are our original prediction and analysis.

Although Apple held a September virtual event (here's everything Apple announced), those expecting iPhones were disappointed -- the event focused on the new Apple Watch 6, Apple Watch SE, and iPads instead. The announcement date for the iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 Max, and possible 12 Pro Max (or the iPhone 12 Mini?) remains up in the air. Note that Apple has not confirmed the names of the phones, but we'll go with those for now. Our best guess, however, as to when Apple will announce the phones is either Oct. 13 or 14.

Microsoft also recently said it would release a new standalone version of Microsoft Office for both Windows and Mac -- no subscription required -- at some point in 2021.
