In a few days, .eu is turning 20 🎂

Back in 2006, the launch of .EU went beyond domains. It was a big deal since it marked the beginning of a true European identity on the web.

We asked our founder, Xavier Buck, what the launch was actually like at the time.

In 2006, everyone wanted the good names, rules kept changing, and the whole thing was way more complex than people expected.

Does that scenario sound like 2026? Different context, same feeling: things are moving fast and nobody fully knows where it’s going yet.

ICANN’s Mumbai meeting dedicated 19 sessions to DNS abuse.

That tells you everything about how big this topic has become. We are far from reaching a consensus on how it should be handled.

Registrars, for example, only have one real lever: suspend the entire domain. Nothing more granular.
