Today, there are over 2.6 BILLION smartphone users worldwide. smartphones have become such an integral part of our lives to the point where 87% of the owners ALWAYS have their smartphones by their side, and 67% of people check their phones every 15 MINUTES.
Behind every smartphone, is a Mobile Operating System (or Mobile OS for short). In 2016, your smartphone is mostly running Google’s Android (83% of the Mobile Market Share), Apple’s iOS (nearly 14% of the market), or Microsoft’s Windows Phone ( at only 2.3% of the market share).
Android remains the leading smartphone OS across the world as there are over 4,000 device series powered by Android (Samsung, Huawei, Lenovo, and Xiaomi being the top Android phone makers), while Apple’s iOS only powers the iPhone and iPad series of the company itself.
Both Android and iOS run mobile applications, these applications are built natively in the Java programming language (Android), or Swift (or Objective-C, for iOS).
Today, there are over 2.2 MILLION Android apps on the Google Play Store, and nearly 2 MILLION apps on Apple’s App Store.
It is clear that Android and iOS are the two largest smartphone operating systems in the market today, and through our series , we will be highlighting different topics that relate to these two Mobile OS giants (History, Versions, Features, News, and more ... )
