Ensuring that the developer is quickly integrated into the project and able to make a meaningful contribution is essential for maximizing productivity and minimizing the risk of project delays - especially when it comes to contract developers.

HF-Solution has more than 50 employees in offices around the world, many of whom work remotely. We may have 3 to 5 new employees per quarter, so the stages of onboarding are fine-tuned.

The are 5 the most effective tips to speed up and streamline the onboarding process for new software developers:

✅Create an inner Wiki similar to StackOverflow or Quora, but not public, just for the working team. It should include links to the project documentation, code base, compliance, working programs, CRM tools.
✅Provide access to tools and resources: ensure that the new specialist has access to all the necessary tools and resources needed to start working. This includes access to project management tools, development software, and any other necessary resources. Create all the accounts and privileges for the newcomer, add him to work groups and chats.
✅Automate the adaptation system. Create a simple dashboard where the engineer can see his basic duties, but without the clerical; a list of goals to achieve on the first day, the first week, and by the end of his contract; contacts of colleagues who can be contacted in case of difficulties; access to the necessary information, e.g. links to documents (Especially documentation about the project), passwords.
✅Assign a mentor: Assigning a mentor, ideally an experienced team member, to the new hire is a great way to speed up the onboarding process. The mentor should not be a Team Lead, because he already has lots of tasks, but an experienced developer who can help the new hire navigate the project, answer questions, and provide guidance.
✅Encourage collaboration: Encourage collaboration among the development team. This can be achieved by holding team meetings, assigning group projects, and providing opportunities for the new hire to work with other developers.

🆗In conclusion, some common truths: good project documentation, readable code that corresponds to the documentation, a breakdown of components, well written tickets, Wiki with links to Jira, Confluence and Git will help to avoid any questions from a newcomer except the ones which should arise only at the level of business logic.
