What are iSIMs?
iSIMs, or integrated SIMs, are SIM cards that are integrated directly into the device’s processor. Unlike eSIMs, which are still separate components on a printed circuit board (PCB), iSIMs eliminate the need for any physical SIM card or tray. Instead, they embed the SIM functionality into the device’s hardware, allowing it to connect to any cellular network.
iSIM technology was developed by ARM, a leading chip designer that powers most smartphones and IoT devices. Qualcomm, another chip giant, has partnered with ARM and Thales Group, a cybersecurity company, to bring iSIM technology to its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is expected to power many flagship Android phones in 2023.
