🔗 Connecting quantum networks through open standards 🔗

We have published our ETSI GS QKD 020 reference implementation on GitHub.

ETSI GS QKD 020 defines a REST-based API that allows different key-management systems to exchange keys within a trusted node. This helps QKD networks support applications across infrastructure that is not built entirely by one vendor.

The Merqury implementation includes:

• Interoperable KMS-to-KMS key exchange
• Mutual TLS authentication
• Support for multiple keys and application identifiers
• Practical launch and testing examples
• A Rust-based, open-source codebase

The software was developed through PRISM EuroQCI, Malta’s national initiative to build a quantum communication network and advance practical, secure and standards-compliant QKD integration.

Early January 2026 gave us a neat “maturity snapshot” in 48 hours 🧭. First, D-Wave announced a demonstration of scalable, on-chip cryogenic control for gate-model qubits, targeting a major scaling bottleneck 🧊⚙️.

Then D-Wave announced an agreement to acquire Quantum Circuits, explicitly positioning to bring superconducting gate-model systems to market in 2026 🤝📈.

📌 A meaningful quantum-security update for 2026 planning 📌

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) (the U.S. standards body behind the SP 800 cybersecurity guidance used in many audits and security programs) is updating SP 800-56A and revising SP 800-56C to better support hybrid key establishment 🛡️

In simple terms: SP 800-56A is the “how two systems agree a secret” rulebook, and SP 800-56C is the “how that secret becomes real encryption keys” rulebook. The revision path allows a hybrid model where you combine a classical shared secret with a PQC/KEM shared secret before key derivation 🔐⚙️

Why this matters: Organisations can harden key establishment now, without a full rip-and-replace, while staying aligned with real-world protocols, interoperability, and compliance constraints ✅
