🇲🇺 Celebrating Independence & Embracing Interdependence 🇲🇺
As we reflect and rightly celebrate our independence from the United Kingdom, I thank God for being a Mauritian—living in a free country, not under the administration of another nation, not forced into military service, free to choose my own path. I am grateful for free education 🎓, free healthcare 🏥, and the ability to live in peace 🕊️ with people of different faiths. I cherish the friendships 🤝 and shared hardships that shape us, and the freedom to express my faith ✝️ without persecution or the threat of death.
I thank God for the island of my birth—Mauritius! 🌴💙 Forever in my heart, the land where I was born and raised, where I grew into the person I am today.
But life has taught me one undeniable truth:
🚨 We cannot be independent of each other! 🚨
Many young people dream of the freedom they will have at 18—believing that once they reach adulthood, they will finally be independent, free from parental authority, free to do as they please, with no one directing their lives.
✨ Independent at last! ✨
I was once one of them, dreaming of this time of complete freedom and opportunity.
But let me tell you—nothing is further from the truth.
🔹 At 18, we are still dependent on our parents for shelter 🏡, food 🍛, education 📚, and financial support 💰.
🔹 We rely on teachers and lecturers 👩🏫, bus drivers 🚍, taxi drivers 🚖, and metro operators 🚆.
🔹 We depend on friends for companionship 👫, teammates to succeed in sports 🏆, and the government to establish policies that provide us with opportunities.
🔹 We count on the police 👮, firemen 🚒, religious leaders ⛪, and legal institutions ⚖️ to keep our society running.
What does this tell us?
💡 That we should not only celebrate our independence but also honour our dependence on one another.
We must cultivate relationships, strengthen communities, and build a united society—because no one achieves success alone.
💬 There is no such thing as a truly independent human being.
We have been created to live in community.
Love ❤️ and life 💫 are only meaningful when shared with others.
We are stronger when we are interdependent! 💪
So, as we celebrate our independence from colonial rule 🏛️, let us also fight against anything that enslaves us—divisive systems, corruption, hatred, and oppression. Just as we once broke free from British rule, we must stand against anything that threatens our strength and prosperity as a nation.
💙 Let us not only celebrate independence but also embrace our interdependence as Mauritians—as one people, one nation, bound together in peace ☮️, justice ⚖️, and liberty 🗽.
🚀 We are all for each other—because alone, we are nothing. 🚀
