The RME Crossfeed effect emulates speaker listening on headphones by blending a small, delayed amount of the left channel into the right ear, and vice versa. This reduces the extreme stereo separation and "in-head" localization common with headphones, creating a more natural and less fatiguing soundstage.
How it works: When you listen to traditional stereo speakers, both of your ears hear sound from both speakers. Your left ear hears the left speaker first, but a split-second later, it also hears the right speaker (with a slight delay and altered frequency response due to your head absorbing some of the sound). This acoustic phenomenon, known as the Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF), is what allows the human brain to locate sounds in space.
Headphones completely bypass this natural acoustic process by isolating each audio channel directly to each ear (100% channel separation). This unnatural isolation is why panning a guitar completely to the left in headphones sounds jarring.
The Crossfeed effect in TotalMix FX addresses this through a series of specific acoustic implementations:
1. Channel Blending: A delayed and attenuated version of the opposite channel into your left and right ears.
2. Equalization (Treble Reduction): Because human heads block higher frequencies more effectively than lower frequencies, the algorithm reduces the crossfed high-frequency content. This mimics the acoustic shadow of the human head.
3. Delay: The delayed signal perfectly correlates with the distance between your ears, tricking your brain into perceiving the sound as if it is coming from a pair of physical monitors in front of you.
