Keeping young people safe online is a priority we all share โ and it takes all of us working together. ๐ค
We brought together Malaysian media, creators, civil society organizations, government representatives, youth and parent voices in Kuala Lumpur for our Screen Smart program, where we shared the latest updates to Instagram Teen Accounts โ now with built-in protections inspired by 13+ content ratings, turned on by default for teens in Malaysia.
Here's what's new:
๐ Age-appropriate by default โ Teens will now see content similar to what they'd see in an age-appropriate movie, without needing to change a single setting.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Limited Content for parents โ A new, stricter option that gives families even more control, including filtered content, blocked search terms, and restricted comments.
๐ก๏ธ Expanded protections โ Teens won't be able to follow or interact with accounts sharing inappropriate content, and restricted content is blocked across Explore, Feed, Stories, comments and DMs.
These updates build on our ongoing commitment to Malaysia โ from training over 5,500 MSMEs in digital skills, to reaching over 13 million Malaysians through our safety and anti-scams programs with partners like Ratio:Cause, CelcomDigi, Ton Ton and the Content Forum.
Because building a safer internet for young Malaysians isn't something any one organization can do alone. It takes families, educators, government, and industry โ together. ๐ฒ๐พ
