World Hepatitis Day is observed on this day in remembrance of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg’s birthday, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV). He also developed a diagnostic test and a vaccine for the virus to help eradicate hepatitis infections.
Hepatitis is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver, and is of several types, which can further progress to related illnesses that could be fatal and can be prevented if individuals are vaccinated timely during their life span. Also, spread of infection can be reduced by avoiding usage of infected needles and getting tested for the virus.
According to WHO, low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030.
