DNS - Forwarders vs Root Hints

DNS is used to resolve ip address from a hostname or URL webpage. Your local DNS server needs forwarders and/or root hints to resolve ip address of internet URL address. You may use both ways, however when you only have 1 option due to security policy or what so ever, then you better go with forwarders to your ISP DNS due to its static IP (good for firewall rule) and lesser hops (compare to root hints servers).

Looking forward to implements DNS server?

Encoding, Encryption and Hash differences :

Encoding is a way to coding the plain text to another format so that it can be used by other application (keyword : data usability). The algorithm is available publicly and known widely. Example: ASCII, UTF-8.

Encryption is a way to encrypt plain text using cipher (synonym for encryption algorithm) with a key to get the cypher text which can be decrypt by certain people only who has the pair key.
-- symmetric key : DES, AES
-- asymmetric key : Public-Private key

Hash is a way (mathematics algorithm way) to reform your data into a fixed length of data in order to ensure the purity of your data. Example : SHA-1, MD5.

Global File System - GFS is file system that can be used on standalone server and it can be used also for cluster nodes where all the nodes require simultaneously acces to the disk.

It can be used on basica partition, however Red Hat does not support GFS or GFS2 (GFS(2)) filesystems in clustered mode directly on a disk (ie. whole disk device) or on a disk partition in clustered mode (lockproto=lock_dlm).

Red Hat only supports GFS(2) filesystems when the block device is a clustered LVM (CLVM) logical volume. This requirement is noted in the GFS2 product documentation.

The Global Network Block Device - GNBD driver allows a node to export its local storage as a GNBD over a network so that other nodes on the network can share the storage. Client nodes importing the GNBD use it like any other block device. Importing a GNBD on multiple clients forms a shared storage configuration through which GFS can be used.

Redundant Array Independent Disk - Raid is a data storage virtualization technology to combine multiple hard disk into 1 logical disk to provide data redundancy and/or to improve performance.

It has several RAID levels. Raid 0,1,5,6,10, etc.

Raid 0 - fastest performance, no redundancy. It stripes N hard disks into 1 logical disk with capacity as big as the hard disks size in total. Mostly used for PoC / demo to show how fast your server is.

Example : 3 hard disk . Raid 0 will create 1 Logical unit with size 30GB. Your OS will see it as 1 hard disk 30GB.

Stripe and Span is different. Stripe means it is using all the hard disk back and forth, while the span means that it is using the first hard disk until it is full and then it continues to the next hard disk.

Benefit of span is that you can use different capacity hard disks. whereas in stripe, you may use different capacity hard disk, but the logical unit capacity is only double the size of your smallest drive.

Example : 1 hard disk 10GB and 1 hard disk 7GB. Raid 0 will create 1 Logical unit with size 14GB (the remaining 3 GB from the first hard disk is wasted).

Looking for data migration or change array raid level?

Fishbone analysis - It is a method that people use to find a root cause of a problem by broaden up all the possibility root cause with "4w-1h" method (why, who, where, when and how) and by drill it deep down with "why" question.

A B
/-- /_ / _/__
\ \ \----
\ \ \----
C D E

Example of problem: unsatisfied employee
A : office location
B : salary
C : managers
D : career
E : workload

Let's drill down the A part:
1. why location is a concern?
==> because employees always stuck in jam
2. why do they stuck in jam?
==> because their house is in suburban
3. why is their house in suburban?
==> because house in city in expensive
4. why house in city is expensive?
==> because many people work in city to avoid jam
5. why is it so jammed?
==> because people need to travel to work.
6. why people need to travel to work?
==> because they do not have system to cater work from home solution

Would like to implement working from home solution?

MongoDB - Open source of NoSQL (Not Only) SQL database that can be used for data mining for analytic. It uses JSON and BSON format as opposed to conventional database that is using a structured data such as record, column, and rows.

Oracle Cluster FileSystem - OCFS is a filesystem that is used on shared storage disk so that all cluster nodes can write and read to the disk almost at same time. As contrast, the convention filesystem ext4 can cause problem when you write the shared disk at same time.

It is mainly used by SuSE linux. Whereas Redhat is using GFS - Global File system for the clustering file system.

You may use LVM as well BUT you should use cLVM (cluster LVM) which work closely with DLM - Distributed Locking mechanism.

Are you interested to implement clustering on linux using one of the filesystem?

Distributed replication block device solution - DRBD is software layer between buffer/cache hard disk and IO scheduler. It replicates the block device (hard disk) into another device remotely via network TCP/IP protocol.

It is used mainly for High availability clustering and Disaster recovery solution. However, problem may occur when split brain happens, BUT.. we can fix it for you.

Interested to implement it and ensure your Business continuity plan is working?
