eClinicsPro – A Hospital Information Management System (HIMS)
In health care business one cannot afford to compromise with the accuracy and timely availability of information. A Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) is a system for the computerization of day-to-day activities in a typical Hospital thereby improving efficiency for better servicing of the patients and infuses transparency of operations.
A significant part of the operation of any hospital involves the acquisition, management and timely retrieval of great volumes of information.
This information typically involves - patient personal information and medical history, staff information, room, staff, operating theater scheduling, various facilities waiting lists, accounting system, billing, various clinics, prescription and drugs, Lab/radiological investigations, Inventories of different materials etcetera. All of this information must be managed in an efficient and cost wise fashion so that the hospital's resources may be effectively utilized.
Most hospital uses a manual system for the management and maintenance of critical information. This system requires numerous paper forms, with data file centers spread throughout the hospital management infrastructure. As patients goes through the hospital, Form and forms are everywhere. There is a fair bit of initial training required for staff to become familiar with the paperwork and a fair bit of time is required to physically complete and manage/organize the forms correctly.
These forms, due to its nature, may be misplaced, lost, receive wrong data as they transit between departments resulting in loss of vital information. Multiple copies of the same information exist in the hospital. It is not uncommon for patient information to be updated on some but not all data file centers. This lag between the request for a change and the actual change may result in a potentially damaging misinformation.
Retrieving patient file is a major problem if he/she had not been in the hospital for a while.
It is clear that the manual system is quite cumbersome and inefficient. While the current system is functional, the hospital's human and capital resources cannot be utilized in an efficient fashion.
Due to general concern for providing the best service possible to the public, a hospital would like to ensure that it is using its scarce resources in the most efficient manner possible. With this in mind an alternative digital system should be introduced which will facilitate efficient hospital management. Specifically, the system should help the hospital manage her numerous information and monitor the various resources that are available at the hospital.
There is an immediate need to replace the existing manual system with an automated system to efficiently manage hospital resources and perform its day to day operations with an objective to fulfill its vision.
