94.3 Royal FM Kigali Opens Cutting-Edge Broadcasting Studio with Integration of Lawo Virtual Radio Solutions

The new studio at 94.3 Royal FM represents a monumental leap in broadcasting technology. By eliminating the traditional XLR cables, the station, with this new concept, now relies on a Cisco switch for the distribution of video and audio signals (AES67) and control throughout the facility. Heart of this state-of-the-art setup is a Lawo virtual mixer, seamlessly integrating the studio components. The inclusion of the Multicam video system, which automatically responds to microphone signals and is controlled by the audio mixer, offers listeners and viewers an immersive experience unparalleled in the region.

And now for the technical side of the 2024 Grammy Awards.

The Music Mix Mobile trucks (Eclipse and Voyager) split the mixing duties for the multiple acts on the show. They sit on the outside truck pad at the top of the arena ramp. This is approximately 500' from the Denali Video trucks at the inside loading docks.

For the first time we have eliminated all copper connectivity to these trucks from downstairs. We use (3) LAWO Dallis Mic Pre Racks (per truck) on 12 strands of single mode fiber. Also (1) Dallis Frame (per truck) for connectivity to the Denali production truck. AES, Analog and MADI connectivity from those (2) racks. These racks provided 168 microphone channels 24 return channels for each truck, and 24CH-Analog IO, 24CH-AES IO and 64 Channels of MADI IO.

The video NTSC reference, AES DARS reference, and all video signals are sent to our trucks via a very inventive, super secret Hugh Healy (Denali EIC) box and a Telecast Viper system.

So we are completely void of copper to copper connectivity and all the ground interactions that come along with it. Very cool way to go, and all done on (5) TAC12 Single Mode cables with lots of spare strands. Much less cable to run and strike on these massive awards shows.

Aside from the connectivity inside we ran our standard WAVES SuperRack Sound Grid System plus a second new Sound Grid Performer hosting VST3 plugs adding to the insert possibilities. We also used a UAD Live Rack, TC Electronic 6000, and Eventide Eclipse.

All of this is recorded to (2) 192 CH AVID HDX ProTools Systems. We record digital scratch video via a Black Magic Design system and synchronize video playback for all soundcheck and Dress performances for engineering tweaks and artist r***e.

All this allows the broadcast music engineers to hone a mix that will then be sent to the Denali truck which adds additional elements for air. All mixed in 5.1 but monitored in both surround and LT_RT for broadcast.

This was Music Mix Mobile's 15 year as the music facilities provider for the show and we are humbled to be trusted with such an important broadcast and thrilled to be working alongside the best team in audio. As my good friend and Grammy engineer Eric Schilling says, this is a FULL TEAM effort and takes a village to pull off. And we couldn't agree with him more.

Cinegize Remote Workstation Graphics was publicly soft-launched this week. It is a new product for a different market for us.
To be precise it is the "remake" of a product we wanted to launch big time right before the pandemic. Cinegize was originally designed as LAN or fast WAN based software KVM-over-IP solution with better quality, lower latency and higher resolution support than any hardware solution.
That goal was achieved but then the pandemic hit and the home office was a new reality for all of us. Back to the drawing board to add Internet low-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity that works through firewalls without VPN and is GPU vendor agnostic. The result is the new version of Cinegize which we made publicly available on the 14th of January 2024.

Key features of Cinegize 24.1 are:

+ Remote workstation graphics solution for LAN and Internet operation
+ 8K or higher support on LAN or high-bandwidth connection
+ Supported color spaces: 4:2:0, 4:2:2, 4:4:4 and RGB
+ Latency less than 16ms or 1 frame at 60fps
+ Support for CUDA, OpenCL and CPU fallback
+ No AMD AMF, Intel QuickSync/OneVPL, or NVIDIA NVENC required
+ Up to 8K support via Internet connection
+ Latency ~ 20-30ms plus Internet distance delay
+ Virtual Display Adapter driver for use in VMs, for VDI, or GPU cloud instances or machines without displays attached.
+ Adhoc connections or installation as system service for 24/7 unattended access.
+ AES-256 encryption
+ No man-in-the-middle -> peer-to-peer transmission
+ Support for AMD, Intel and NVIDIA hardware acceleration
+ CPU fallback support when no GPU available
+ Use of open, non-proprietary protocols: SRT and WebRTC
+ Simple installer for Windows 10 / Windows 11.

Roadmap
We have a long list of features we will add over the coming months, so watch this space. The Cinegize software does notify the user of a new release, if that option is activated.

We have the lofty goal to make Cinegize the best remote graphics solution not just for broadcast and media & entertainment, which is our home, but also for education, engineering, finance, healthcare, aviation and many others.

Cinegize can of course tie-in with our other Cinegy GmbH products, such as Multiviewer, Capture and Air, as it is "just" another IP video source.

This would have been impossible to implement in SDI so they went with ST2110 and NMOS. Their installation now realizes the three main benefits of having a giant IP network: maximum flexibility, agility and scalability to cover any event of any size with a highly automated and intuitive workflow."

Concerns about Nigeria's capacity to produce and broadcast sporting content hasn't gone unnoticed. This has attracted the attention and reprove of other Football Federations and respective broadcast service providers (Both State owned and private)

Pre -pandemic Broadcast Production & Distribution technologies where accelerated, improved upon and swiftly deployed to ensure the capacity to reach an audience in "billions". This move created new methods of content creation, distribution and advertising with highly interactive and immersive experiences for the audience.

In my opinion, this initiative should be supported by the Government via "non-choke-hold regulations" and tax breaks/waivers for the private sector and state owned broadcasters to grow their operational and technical capacity, capability and bridge this widening gap.
