Nigerian Research and Education Network A world-class Research and Education Network in Africa. RENs have been established in over 100 countries across the globe including more than 20 in Africa.

The Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN), like all other Research and Education Networks (RENs) world-wide, is designed as a private network that seeks to connect education and research institutions directly:
- to each other,
- to other RENs, and
- to the “Commercial” or “Commodity” Internet. It has been built, like others, using high-speed fiber optics, switches, servers, ro

uters and high-capacity radios to establish the connectivity and runs its own Network Monitoring Center (NMC) to monitor traffic on the network using a state-of-the-art monitoring software solution. NgREN is the first operational REN in West and Central Africa. The NUC in partnership with the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVC), established a foundation that ensures that Universities are able to communicate, collaborate, access and share resources across national and international boundaries, primarily for the purpose of research and learning, but with added capabilities to offer the efficiencies of unified communications and consolidation of digital content. In its setup phase, the NgREN received support from the World Bank and the National Backbone has provision for up to 4 MPLS core routers, 4 PE routers, 27 last-mile radio pairs, 29 CPE sets, 2 BGP routers, 1 primary NMC, and 1 secondary (DRC) NMC, and that the created paths as well as the routing and switching equipment are able to support multiples of 10Gbps on the backbone.

NgREN Completes Phase 1 Identity Federation Onboarding, Expanding Nigerian Access to Global Research Services

The Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) has concluded Phase 1 of its Institutional Onboarding Workshop under the NgREN Identity Federation (NgRENID) Capacity Building Programme, marking a significant milestone in strengthening secure digital identity management and expanding Nigerian institutions’ access to global research and education services.

Phase one of the programme, which had three different batches train for two days each, equipped technical personnel from participating institutions with the knowledge and practical skills needed to onboard to NgRENID.

Information and Communication Technology professionals from universities and other NgREN-connected institutions took part in intensive technical sessions covering identity federation technologies and their implementation.

In an opening remark, NgREN Programme Coordinator Dr Joshua Atah, who joined participants and members of the NgREN technical team for Batch 1 of the training, emphasised the network’s commitment to building institutional capacity for secure digital identity management across Nigeria’s higher education sector.

He explained that the workshop is in furtherance of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening digital infrastructure and connectivity across Nigerian Higher Education Institutions. This, he said, is part of preparations for onboarding beneficiary institutions (basic, secondary and tertiary) to the NgREN, which has reached an advanced stage.

“This workshop is part of the onboarding process and to ensure timely ex*****on of the project”, Atah said.

Seventy (70) participants from thirty-eight (38) institutions received hands-on training in deploying and managing Identity Providers (IdPs), federation requirements, authentication mechanisms, metadata management, and international best practices for identity federation. The sessions were designed to prepare institutions for successful onboarding into NgRENID and to enable secure access to NgREN services and global research and education resources.

Facilitators introduced participants to the fundamentals of identity federation, explaining how trusted digital identities allow students, researchers, lecturers, and other members of the academic community to access multiple digital services using a single institutional login, simplifying authentication while strengthening institutional security and improving access to online research and learning platforms.

NUC Plans 10-Year STEM Strategy to Turn Nigerian Universities into Innovation Hubs by 2036

The National Universities Commission (NUC) says Nigeria’s higher education system is on course to become a hub for innovation, research, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving by 2036. Executive Secretary Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu said this while unveiling the Draft National STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Transformation Strategy for Higher Education in Nigeria (2026–2036) at a Stakeholders’ Meeting to validate the draft strategy, held on Tuesday in Abuja.

Prof Ribadu, who was represented at the event by the Director, Research, Innovation and ICT of the NUC, said universities must produce graduates with practical skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial capacity to meet the demands of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, renewable energy, and data science.

He explained that the strategy, developed by a committee inaugurated on 25 February 2026 with support from the Agence Française de Développement’s (AFD) Blueprint ICT-Dev Project, provides a 10-year roadmap covering curriculum modernisation, digital infrastructure, and faculty development, as well as research, innovation, and industry collaboration. He said the plan also addresses research commercialisation, quality assurance, and sustainable financing, and aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the National Development Plan, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

The NgREN Programme Coordinator, Dr Joshua Atah, joins participants from universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, alongside NgREN technical staff facilitating Batch 1 of the two-day Capacity Building Programme on the Onboarding of Institutions onto the Nigerian Research and Education Network Identity Federation (NgRENID).

The training programme equips technical personnel with the practical skills to deploy Identity Providers (IdPs), manage federation metadata, implement secure authentication, and onboard their institutions to NgRENID, enabling seamless access to NgREN services and global research and education resources, including eduGAIN and eduroam.
