Good palm oil starts right from the palm fruits through production, packaging, and proper storage.
If you want quality oil, you must understand the source.
In Nigeria, we have three main types of palm fruits
Dura β This type has a thick shell and a hard nut. It produces a small quantity of oil, so itβs not the best for commercial production.
Pisifera β This variety has no shell at all. It is mainly used for breeding and not for direct oil production.
Tenera β This is the best and most recommended type.
It has a thin shell and thick, oily pulp, which produces a higher quantity and better quality of palm oil. Most commercial producers rely on this variety.
However, the type of fruit alone is not enough, how the oil is processed matters a lot. Some producers make oil from unripe or rotten palm fruits, which affects the quality.
Unripe fruits donβt release enough oil and it darkens the oil while rotten fruits can give the oil a bad smell and increase spoilage.
Good producers are patient enough to allow the fruits to fully ripen before processing. Be careful with the color too. Naturally processed palm oil has a rich reddish orange color.
If the oil is too bright or looks artificially enhanced, it may have been tampered with using colorants to cover poor quality.
Smell is another key indicator. Fresh palm oil should have a pleasant, natural aroma not sour, not smoky, and definitely not offensive.
A bad smell is often a sign that rotten fruits were used or the oil was poorly handled.
Packaging and storage also play a big role. You might buy freshly produced oil, but if itβs stored In improperly washed kegs or drums. A little amount of water can conterminate the oil
For proper storage
Always use clean, odor free containers
Avoid storing directly on bare cement floors or tiles
Use wooden pallets to Keep the oil in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
Quality palm oil is not by chance it is a result of good fruit selection, proper processing, and careful storage.
