When I was about eight or ten years old, my sister and I had a funny little method for drying our school uniforms.

There was no iron in the house at the time, so we would wake up early in the morning, wash our uniforms, and place them inside our mother’s wrapper. Each of us would hold one end of the wrapper, and together we would twist it as tightly as we could to squeeze the water out of the clothes.

One morning, while twisting with all our strength, we accidentally tore a small part of our mother’s wrapper.

The following day, my mother began moving from one neighbour’s door to another, complaining bitterly that some wicked person had been secretly cutting her wrapper with a knife.

My sister and I followed closely behind her, looking concerned and giving her all the moral support we could—while keeping completely silent about what had really happened.
