HamictREPORT ON DIGITAL PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS TRAINING, by Victoria Odoh, NIPRSA UNN member.
Organized by NIPR Students’ Association UNN
The Digital Public Relations and Communication Skills Training was organized to expose students to modern trends in communication and public relations. The training was practical and interactive, as participants were taught how communication has evolved in the digital age and how social media has become an important tool for branding, audience engagement, and public relations.
The training sessions I attended were Week 1 and Week 2. Both sessions focused on helping participants understand how to strategically communicate, create engaging content, and build strong online visibility in today’s digital world.
WEEK 1:
Understanding Digital Public Relations and Modern Communication.
WEEK 2:
Using Social Media Strategically for PR and Brand Communication.
The first week of the training introduced participants to the modern digital communication environment. The facilitator explained that the world is gradually moving into a generative AI age where media and content can easily be created digitally. Because of this, communication professionals must learn how to adapt and remain relevant.
One of the major points emphasized during the session was the importance of becoming producers of content rather than only consumers. Participants were encouraged to build portfolios, develop useful communication skills, and start building their personal brands early.
The training also explained important areas of digital public relations such as press releases, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The facilitator stressed the need for consistency on social media, explaining that regular and strategic posting helps improve visibility and audience engagement.
Participants were also introduced to some important components of digital PR. These included monitoring online conversations, social listening, relationship management, audience analysis, content distribution, and performance evaluation through social media metrics. The facilitator explained that understanding audience behavior and measuring engagement are important for successful communication campaigns.
Another important lesson from the session was the importance of website management and online presence. Participants were made to understand that digital communication goes beyond posting content alone; it also involves managing online platforms properly and maintaining good relationships with audiences.
At the end of the session, participants were given an assignment to prepare a brief PR campaign proposal for an existing business or organization in Enugu or the South-East region by identifying communication problems and analyzing the organization’s social media activities. .
