Introduction to optics fiber

For years there has been a need for that faster internet connection. People rely on the internet for almost everything, information/research, streaming movies from popular services like netflix or hulu, online gaming, even with mobile phones there is a need for that faster connection. Fiber Optics is the answer! Our old copper based cabling simply wont support the speeds and data capacity needed this day in age. Big companies such as AT&T/Verizon & even the U.S. Government have invested in updating our old copper cabling to Fiber Optic Cabling. So why is it not everywhere? After investing billions in upgrading our old copper cabling to fiber cabling the communications industry realized the man power simply isn't there to install it fast enough. What does this mean? It means there are a lot of jobs out there in this field, the need for fiber optic professionals is high. I am here to teach you the basics of fiber optics.

LIGHT SOURCE AND POWER METER

As optical signals traverse the network, many variables can affect the quality of transmission. This is an important factor for network performance. Low signal strength that fails to meet the transceiver threshold translates to no connectivity and difficulty to scale capacity in future.

The light signal naturally reduces in power as it progresses so, to test the signal, technicians use an optical light source and power meter to inject light into one end and measure the signal at the end point. Low power could indicate there is a fiber defect impeding the signal, such as a macrobend or a bad connector, or a fiber break. Additional testing would be required to identify and locate the fault.

WRAPPING TUBE CABLE DESIGN
The new ultra-density fiber optic cable technology, Wrapping Tube Cable, is made possible by the introduction of SpiderWeb Ribbon. SWR
allows for significant reduction in cable diameter because the ribbon can be bunched and bundled allowing it to be packed tightly into
a high density cable.
2.1 SpiderWeb Ribbon
As mentioned previously, the key technology that allows for this innovative cable design is SpiderWeb Ribbon. SWR, illustrated in Figure 1—
SpiderWeb Ribbon Design and Functionality, consists of 12 fibers that are connected to each other by an intermittent UV-curable resin. The
intermittent nature of the bond allows for the ribbon to be bunched similar to a bundle of loose fibers. The intermittent bond also allows the
ribbon to act as either a traditional ribbon for mass fusion splicing or to be broken out into individual fibers. The SpiderWeb Ribbon can also be
striped and bundled with other SpiderWeb Ribbons to create a high-density fiber package.
