Northern Nigeria is stepping into the climate innovation space deliberately.

On the 11th, Startup Kano convened key stakeholders across government, development partners, and the innovation ecosystem to mark a significant milestone: the advancement of the Climate Innovation Ecosystem Development (CIED) pipeline.

This is not just another program, CIED represents a structured approach to building a climate innovation pipeline, one that identifies, supports, and positions startups to move from early-stage ideas to scalable, investment-ready solutions.

At a time when climate change is increasingly shaping economic realities across vulnerable regions, the need is clear: We must move from conversations to systems.

Through CIED, we are working to:
- Support the emergence of climate-focused startups
- Bridge the gap between innovation and policy
- Connect solutions to climate finance and investment opportunities
- Strengthen the broader ecosystem required for scale

This effort is strengthened by the active support of the Kano State Government, signaling a growing commitment to innovation-led development, Funding support from UK in Nigeria through PACE Nigeria and ongoing efforts to translate climate policy into actionable innovation pathways through the Green stack toolkit.

What we are building is not isolated. It sits in between innovation, policy, and capital, where real transformation happens.

CIED is an important step toward positioning Northern Nigeria as a viable hub for climate innovation and investment and we welcome collaboration with partners looking to support scalable, locally grounded climate solutions.

They are currently going through an intensive climate finance readiness classes, venture building & support, and investor engagement; to be equipped and ready to access Climate finance and deploy their solutions in the community

This cohort marks a significant step toward strengthening Kano’s climate innovation pipeline; from ideation to investment and measurable impact.

Many brilliant climate solutions fail, not because they lack passion or intelligence, but because the ecosystem built around them is fragmented, confusing, and difficult to navigate. Policies exist, funding exists, support structures exist, but somehow, startups still struggle to connect the dots.
As we launch the CIED Project, we have a strong commitment to change that!

From bridging the gap of climate finance readiness, to translating policy into action, to creating real pathways for investment, this initiative is about making climate innovation work in real life, especially for youth and women-led startups in Northern Nigeria.

As we officially launched the Climate Innovation Ecosystem Development (CIED) Project in Kano, supported by Pace Nigeria, we started with a powerful multi-stakeholder roundtable/Co-creation.

The aim is to build a powerful toolkit, an extension of the great work of the Kano State Government on the historic Climate change policy; to support Climate actors, startups, investors and researchers from ideation to scale, investment and impact.

With great feedbacks and support from the Government, Innovators, Development Orgs, Academia, and DFI's, this co-creation is the beginning of a shared commitment to build a climate innovation ecosystem that actually works for Northern Nigeria.
