Polar bears are the only bears that are considered marine mammals because they spend so much time on the Arctic Ocean's ice. Polar bears have black skin, not white fur. Their fur is translucent and pigment-free, with a hollow core that reflects and refracts light, making them appear white. Polar bears are excellent swimmers and can swim at a sustained pace of six miles per hour for long distances. They use their front paws to paddle and their hind legs as rudders.
