Africa: Is it really AI-ready?

This raises a significant issue that needs to be addressed because technological advancements have changed how people work.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are commonplace in workplaces, homes, schools, and hospitals. These days, computer algorithms diagnose hospital patients, operate automobiles, and choose what content to display on our smartphones.

Africa, which missed many of the first, second, and third industrial revolutions, must embrace science and technology as the continent's lifeblood.
For instance, big data and AI technologies are present in many markets. ChatGBT and other AI-based learning platforms have become more well-liked in the education sector because of their capacity to converse with students.

Now that they have access to individualized instruction, students can ask questions in the vocabulary of their community and receive help from an English tutor.
AI can automate grading, freeing up teachers' time for other projects.
An AI mobile app in finance and agriculture can advise farmers on the best fertilizer for their crops, which is revolutionary for farmers. However, many will still need to deal with literacy and connectivity problems.

Some banks use AI chatbots to assist with routine tasks or respond appropriately to various customer inquiries, including information about account balances.
Customers of banks can expect prompt financial advice based on their financial goals, risk tolerance, and past financial performance from Chabots or AI-powered bankers, who are available around the clock.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is nowadays used in transportation to predict flight delays, manage traffic, and improve the efficiency and safety of ocean freight.
In recent years, Africa has made significant progress in implementing AI technologies.
Several nations, including South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, have set up AI research facilities and innovation hubs.

These programs are designed to promote cooperation, AI research, and development, emphasizing solving regional problems and promoting economic expansion.
Additionally, African governments have begun enacting policies and strategies for STEM education in recognition of the significance of artificial intelligence.
The African Union initiated the "AI for Development Initiative" to advance AI-based approaches for sustainable development throughout the continent.

Africa has made significant strides toward preparing for an AI-driven future. However, several obstacles still stand in the way of the continent fully realizing AI's potential.
Access to inexpensive technology and dependable internet connectivity in many regions of the continent is a significant barrier.

Do You Know?
These 5 things to consider when buying project management software.

Investing in the best project management software is essential, particularly as your company expands. Additionally, managing the team and the business becomes demanding and challenging, like spinning many plates at once.

Check out these five things to consider when purchasing project management software, which includes some common elements that should be included in your selection to help you make an informed decision.

Scalability and flexibility
The ability to scale up the number of seats, or users, is crucial for project management software to grow with you and your company, and you should consider the cost per user when registering.
Many options have a sliding usage scale, so if you're having this issue, it's probably because you're growing your staff and doing well. Thus, try not to sleep too little! However, avoiding falling behind is crucial if increased productivity results in financial gain.

Cost and ROI
The most obvious question is the next: how much does each service cost? Naturally, this will differ from company to company, but if you manage a team of more than ten to twenty employees, you should think about this.
Your work is made much easier because many of the services are transparent about their pricing. However, it's still important to look into the specifics of each service because those little details could make all the difference in a decision.
It's also essential to consider options that offer a free or basic tier, as these can frequently serve smaller organizations with at most ten employees.

Customization and extra features
One of the critical components of any enterprise software is the ability to customize it to your and your organization's needs. Unlike universally applicable consumer apps, your tools should consider your business's unique needs.
Explore the additional features, if only to ensure you're getting value for your money. Trello provides an iPad Pro version, which may seem like a minor feature to some people but could be a game-changer for others.

Integrations
As they say, "No app is an island," and project management apps are no exception. Your entire productivity suite must function seamlessly, or you risk losing significant opportunities.

Apps
The apps available for each service and their caliber come last, but they are not the least. As previously mentioned, not all apps are created equal, and this could be a differentiator for these services, particularly for those who use iPads and smartphones.

Why AI Augmented Software Will Soon Be Used by Half of Global Developers

According to a recent Gartner Research study, by 2027, half of all enterprise software engineers should be using generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tools to help with the development, testing, and operation of software.

Approximately 5 percent of enterprise software engineers use genAI tools to help with coding today. That number is expected to rise rapidly because, according to the study, existing developers are overworked, unable to build features quickly enough, and less satisfied with their jobs; additionally, software demand exceeds most organizations' capacity.
Large language model (LLM)--based AI-based code generation tools like Replit GhostWriter, Amazon CodeWhisperer, and GitHub Copilot can produce sophisticated recommendations that significantly boost developer productivity. These tools, however, only partially replace the need for human software engineers and developers because genAI is still prone to mistakes and cannot write original code.

Within two years, 80% of software engineering organizations should have platform teams operating as internal suppliers of reusable components, services, and tools for application delivery.

"...Historically, there was no way to compress software development timelines,"
Cisco CIO Fletcher Previn said in an interview. "Now, it turns out you can get a significant acceleration in velocity by helping developers with things like Copilot for code readings, code hygiene, security, commenting; it's good at those things."

Numerous studies indicate that AI coding assistants are becoming the new accelerators, increasing developer happiness and productivity. According to Gartner, by taking care of repetitive tasks, genAI assistants free up developers to concentrate on higher-value work, enabling companies to produce more features with their current teams more quickly.

Additionally, the AI assistants help "citizen" developers build apps more quickly to meet changing business needs.
Lastly, AI-enhanced design-development tools like Figma facilitate the quicker conversion of designs into code and the creation of application front-end presentation layers.
However, issues with genAI continue to arise in all locations where it has been implemented. For instance, organizations considering using such tools continue to be concerned about security flaws, hallucinations, and coding errors.

"We tell all of our clients that these items can cause hallucinations and that risk still exists, but we haven't changed our advice on how to reduce it," Walsh stated. "Your overall DevOps workflow should already include a variety of quality and security scanning tools, and you should have strong code review practices where a senior engineer reviews anything before it's merged."

AI augmentation tools vary in quality based on the code's complexity and proprietary nature. Acceptance rates are typically high for boilerplate tasks, like writing JavaScript code for an HTTP server, because the training data for the underlying LLM is widely available and used.
However, enterprise engineers have discovered that the time savings are not as significant — and the accuracy and performance of the model are not as good — when they're writing more complex code that depends on proprietary business logic that is not well represented in training data that is made available to the public, according to Walsh.

However, in the short to medium term, the accuracy and capabilities of genAI-enabled software creation tools will grow. For example, business users can create disposable apps for data analysis, where enterprise-grade quality is only sometimes necessary.

AI Revolution: Increasing Productivity and Decreased Cognitive Load in Software Development

Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to increase developer productivity. There are now more opportunities than ever for software development to be completed more quickly and accurately thanks to AI-powered tools and algorithms that help developers with various tasks like code analysis.

Balaji Sivasubramanian, senior director of product management at Red Hat Inc., claims that AI can lower cognitive load and increase developer productivity at different stages of development lifecycle. Artificial intelligence (AI) can increase productivity in repetitive tasks like chatting and email multiple times.

"One of the key things we are trying to do is to have a platform to build your new application. Basically, how do you get the data, get ingested, train, build, deploy, and monitor the model and lifecycle of the model?" he said. "Because models are not just one and done; it's always changing. That's on the model side of the house. Then, you have the application that takes advantage of the models, and you have to do the lifecycle of that. Our job is to be a platform player."

Developing into a participant on a platform; It used to be difficult to build models and increase productivity, but now that foundational models can be tuned to fit specific data, any organization can increase productivity. Red Hat is an open-source platform company that manages models' life cycles, develops and implements new applications, and integrates open-source models into production. According to Sivasubramanian, it is currently assisting companies in overcoming adoption barriers for AI and implementing it to boost productivity across industries.

Sivasubramanian noted that competition and various options are crucial for enhancing security and minimizing reliance on a single supplier in AI regulation and governance. People are coming together and heading in the right direction now that the tide has turned. The way technology is governed exudes maturity and security

Top Accounting Software in 2023

Any business that wants to succeed needs accounting software. With the correct tool, you can manage bills, track income and expenses, identify significant financial milestones, and set up a growth strategy for your company.
The best accounting software options that we have hand-picked are listed below.

Xero
Xero is regarded as the finest online freelancer accounting system and comes with an easy-to-use interface. It's perfect for solopreneurs, freelancers, and first-time business owners due to its affordable monthly starting price of $15. Furthermore, Xero works well for larger companies, partnerships, and LLCs with multiple members who oversee the company's finances because it offers free, unlimited user access.

Because Xero's most affordable plan only allows users to send 20 invoices or quotes per month, it is best suited for the smallest businesses, including freelancers. You should use Xero's Growing plan, which costs $42 monthly if you send over 20 invoices.
Fortunately, Xero is reasonably scalable because it offers three plans.
Entrepreneurs operating alone can begin with Xero Early or grow and progress to Xero Established. Advanced features like project tracking, multi-currency support, employee expense tracking and reimbursement, in-depth analytics, and bulk transaction reconciliation are included in this higher-tier plan.

Zoho Books:
Zoho Books is the most scalable accounting software on our list and is rated as one of the best free plans for small businesses, with six plans. New companies with annual revenue under USD 50,000 are eligible for Zoho Books' free plan, which offers more features than most other brands' most affordable paid plans.

Features beneficial to freelancers in the free plan include free accountant access, recurring invoices, client portals, and mileage tracking. Free features like chart of accounts and 1099 contractor management are available to other small business owners.
It's simple to upgrade from Zoho's free plan to any of its four other paid options if your company eventually outgrows the $15 monthly plan. The most expensive plan comes with a host of sophisticated features like advanced inventory management and in-depth reporting, and it is designed for businesses with complicated financial situations.

NetSuite: Best ERP
Most accounting software currently on the market suits expanding companies, including enterprises. However, at some point, the complex financial needs of your business may outgrow the complexity of accounting software like Xero or QuickBooks. It's time to upgrade to an enterprise resource planning solution (ERP) like NetSuite if your accounting program is no longer adequate.

The cloud-based solution from NetSuite integrates and automates the most crucial business functions, including accounting, inventory control, warehouse management, advanced analytics, and reporting. Like most ERPs, NetSuite's adaptable system can be tailored to specific industries, offering special options for businesses in the manufacturing, retail, healthcare, advertising, and wholesale distribution sectors.

Sage Intacct
The intelligent, sophisticated accounting program Sage Intacct is recommended for medium-sized and expanding companies with somewhat intricate financial operations. Advanced, real-time reporting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable are some of its fundamental accounting functions. Additionally, Sage Intacct has an intelligent general ledger driven by artificial intelligence (AI) that can analyze thousands of recorded transactions in minutes and provide reliable, understandable financial insights for your company.

Sage provides accounting solutions for small and large businesses in addition to Sage Intacct. We suggest Sage 50, a cloud-and desktop-based program that includes small-business accounting essentials like tracking expenses and income, billing, and invoicing if Sage Intacct seems too expensive for your requirements.

Wave Accounting:
One of the most significant accounting programs for independent contractors and small business owners is Wave Accounting, which is fully functional and free. Wave's free business accounting software system handles more accounting duties than some premium starter plans, such as FreshBooks ($17 per month), QuickBooks Self-Employed ($15 per month), and Sage Business Accounting ($10 per month).

You can use Wave Accounting to track your finances as a freelancer or small business owner by syncing it with your business credit cards and bank accounts. You can also create multiple free Wave accounts to manage numerous businesses and invite as many people as you like to work with you on your finances, including your accountant and other stakeholders.

The main drawback of Wave is its scalability. Over time, growing businesses with increasingly complex accounting needs will find accommodating their requirements with just one plan challenging. Wave is still your best bet if you're searching for a time-saving, cost-effective solution that provides vital accounting insights in critical reports.

Number of POS Software Installations Globally Said to Surpass 9 Million Mark

In June of this year, POS software installations at retail and hospitality businesses worldwide crossed the nine-million mark, according to a recent study conducted by research and consulting firm RBR Data Services.
The Global POS Software 2023 study reports that as top retailers and hospitality companies adopt next-generation POS systems, there were over 390,000 new POS installations in the year ending in June 2023.

In the last year, US grocery chain Hy-Vee and discounter Aldi Nord were two of the most significant users of point-of-sale software.
Jeni Bloomfield, project lead for RBR Data Services' Global POS Software 2023 research, said, "In recent years, we've seen global giants like Walmart, Taco Bell, and Uniqlo rolling out new POS solutions, proving that even the largest chains realize the need to adapt to a fast-changing landscape while keeping customer experience to the fore."

Aside from grocery stores, several apparel chains have modernized their point-of-sale software systems or adopted cutting-edge technology. Examples include American Eagle Outfitters and New Look, which use mobile devices to reduce traffic at stationary terminals.
Using POS software technology, department store chain Myer and footwear retailer Aldo have attempted to strengthen their omnichannel strategy elsewhere.

Meanwhile, IHOP switched to cloud-based software in the hospitality space to allow flexibility across its network of 1,600 restaurants; Taco John's introduced a new system that allows for rapid menu and price changes across drive-thru and assisted POS. US chain Culver's launched a solution to support physical touchpoints and integration with third-party apps.

Over the next five years, RBR Data Services projects that there will be nearly two million new installations of point-of-sale software. Store network expansion is expected to continue to be robust in developing regions like Latin America.
It also stated that supplier changes will spur growth at large retailers in North America and Europe.

Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) Coming for Software Developers’ Jobs, or Is it Making Developers More Productive?

There is a stereotypical thought lingering in the minds of many that impending doom awaits the future of our jobs in the software space- no thanks to the arrival of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Naysayers, without a doubt, can be presumed to already have grim headlines for the future, at least with captions like; “AI is swallowing the software industry”, “ChatGPT to replace technical writers in less than a decade”, and many other scary predictions.
Having such thoughts run in most minds can’t be an impossibility because technological changes often lead to job losses, but ideally speaking, it shouldn’t drive chills down the spines of most- come to think of it, AI isn’t replacing cashiers handling a cash register in retail stores or at kiosks.

A truism that exists across industries, particularly in software development, will remain as such: AI tools don’t replace human intelligence, but instead, they augment it.
From training AI to developing prompts to vetting outputs, human capacity will remain irreplaceable till the time infinity of the software lifecycle. This is because AI still requires training from a human mentor and, in a way, upholds the tech adage, “garbage in. garbage out”, of which we know that if we don’t give the proper prompts, the answers it provides will more than less be useless.

Understanding and validating output still requires a human expert’s contribution. Take, for instance, a developer asking AI to generate a cloud governance policy; human creativity and judgment will still be required to flag oversights and help it improve.

The blunt truth remains that demand for human developers will remain great by the day and even as years go by. With the spate at which software and innovation are expanding, there will always be room for demand for skilled techies, and this dynamic will only grow more pronounced.

Regarding skilled developers, AI is an invaluable digital best buddy and an assistant that augments human brainpower, eases their job and does not act as a job envier.
Developers themselves are on the hunt for ways that could augment things for them, and AI stands as that technology that can handle the grunt work that stands as a plague and make life easier for them rather than steal it.
