Power in Nigeria has never been about choice.
It has always been about survival.
Years of grid instability made petrol and diesel powered gen the default backup plan. But when fuel subsidy removal hit, the cost of “power as usual” became unbearable; financially, environmentally, and emotionally.
And yet…
This moment of energy crisis also opened a door for alternatives. Clean energy alternatives are no longer nice-to-have.
They are necessary.
They are possible.
But adoption remains painfully low in many communities.
That’s why we’re launching Flip the Switch
Flip the Switch is a campaign anchored in behavioural insight storytelling, and community engagement to accelerate green transition and clean energy adoption in Nigeria.
Created by African Climate Stories and supported by IKEA Foundation, and the ZE-Gen - Zero Emission Generators, this initiative begins with a field research on behaviour-change market analysis rooted in real human insights.
The Field research and Market analysis is led by:
⇨ Dr. Bolajoko Malomo, Human behaviour Psychologist, University of Lagos
⇨ Kira Sano, Environmental and Civic Justice Strategist, KiraKira Institute | University of Southern California
⇨ Daniel Trigo., Analyst and Researcher, University of Southern California | KiraKira Institute
Together, we’re using behavioural science and insight-led storytelling to understand:
⇨Why clean energy adoption is still slow,
⇨What truly motivates households and businesses on choice of power,
⇨How Nigeria can accelerate a just green transition from the ground up.
If you work in the renewable energy sector and believe this research could strengthen your work, comment below and we’ll share the report with you.
If you’d like to partner as an ally, mention your organization, and we’d connect.
We appreciate every repost to amplify and help us connect to more allies.
